The project tests an assumption that expectations of preaching are changing, primarily because of increasing educational attainments of laypersons in African American churches.  Results of these investigations, presented in 24 tables, show that the majority of college students and laypersons agree on many questions concerning the importance of preaching. Based on these findings, the project presents resolutions and four models from the early church, documenting the rise of extreme individualism in culture and churches. This project experiments with sermon and worship planning in a retreat setting involving clergy and laity, with lectionary texts as a focus of activities. Participants grow spiritually and a deeper relationship among participants evolves.  For four years the author invited laypersons into the sermon process.  Laypersons researched and studied texts on their own, and group reflection produced preaching  material.  A high degree of spiritual and intellectual growth was evident among the laypersons invited into the process. The author taught volunteers a theory of extraordinary caregiving to achieve these purposes and observed their interactions with households on welfare over a three-month period. Establishing entry goals is more important than one's preconceived ministry goals.  Planning specific ways to get to know the people, their history, their community, and their particular vision of the congregation's mission within the community needs to precede articulating one's own vision for mission or the generic application of a mission imported from elsewhere. The Church is of God and will never disappear, and it is because we believe this that we have conducted this project in the hope of bringing about change among those of us called Christian beginning with an annual conference of the United Methodist Church.  The practicum was conducted over a 12-week period of time.  Two groups, one made up of female clergy and one made up of male clergy, were recruited from an annual conference and asked to meet as consciousness-raising groups using the book Women's Growth in Connection.  The emphasis of the groups was to focus on justice issues between male/female clergy using their own experience and calling forth their hopes for and commitment to change. Included are the family systems theories of Bowen and Friedman, McGoldrick and Walters' feminist critiques, Aristotle's definition of friendship, Buber's I-Thou theory of relationships, a survey of presbytery leaders, and interviews with pastors successful and unsuccessful in defining, establishing, and maintaining Christian friendship.
