The thesis correlates the type of leadership the pastor uses to the amount of leadership the lay people exhibit.  The research includes writing papers on leadership and the Body of Christ.  A leadership questionnaire will be used.  A ministry task will be reported detailing each aspect of leadership and delegation and follow through. A close partnership is recommended as both profesionally and personally effective and satisfying, strengthening both preaching and worship, and offering a collegial relationship where there might not otherwise be one. The study, through the use of a variety of instruments, examines adjustments, critical incidents and surprises experienced by new pastors and how these affect their competency to be effective leaders.  The study makes a number of suggestions to future graduates and to parishes, seminaries, judicatories (diocese and archdiocese) to assist them in making this adjustment and transition. An effort to build a trust relationship had to begin.  To accomplish this, the congregation had to understand the pastor in certain images. These images, servant, child, friend, and partner, would be topics of sermons describing the congregation and pastor. This understanding would assure the acceptance of pastor and congregation.  The enlistment of a small response group of church members and a spiritual mentor proved to be helpful. Our shift from the right to the left socially and theologically has had a profound impact on the use of the intinerate evangelist at the end of the 20th century.  A survey instrument was used to determine the validity of this thesis.  The survey did not prove this thesis but did indicate the declining use of the itinerate evangelist. The denomination must move from marketing the services of its seminaries to continuing education driven by the needs of clergy.  Included is research by Barbara Wheeler of Auburn Theological Seminary of New York into the educational practices of 'innovators' and 'pacesetters.' Correlation is shown between the faith stage of clergy using the interview designed by James W Fowler and the type and style of continuing education they choose. A quantitative, descriptive method of research using a mailed questionnaire was employed.  Many differences were found.
