In today's economy a full-time priest serving one altar places severe demands on these congregations.  As small churches over-invest financially in clergy deployment they also over-invest emotionally.  An atmosphere is created where clergy are expected to over-function to match the high level of investment.  The stresses caused by this phenomena are causing clergy 'burn-out' while these small cures are becoming harder to fill.  The project/thesis explores the connection between financial over-investment and the emotional expectations to over-function. The purpose of the survey was to determine the level of stress and burnout in the pastors' lives.  The survey revealed that generally pastors are very satisfied with their calling as pastors, but they also revealed the pastors' strong proclivity to ignore wife and family, and to deny any possible warning signs of stress and burnout. While many of the existing models of intervention are useful and worthwhile, this thesis will suggest that certain key ingredients are sometimes avoided or neglected in an attempt to move quickly toward a satisfactory resolution of a problem. Effective problem solving, especially when dealing with a difficult person, cannot always be reduced to a simple step-by-step approach.  The purpose of this thesis will be to explore and present another option for dealing with the presence of a difficult person that is both biblical and practical. The research was intended to show trends and attitudes.  The study began with the premise that Southern Baptist theology and praxis holds a rigid view of divorce when applied to pastors and fails to allow for divorce for any cause other than adultery.  The research consisted of interviews, letters, questionnaires, books, articles, and tapes.  The study was limited to the preaching pastor only.  Respondents as a consensus offered little encouragement to the divorced pastor returning to the pulpit.  There was a strong indication that pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention are taking a more moderate view toward divorced persons in their congregations. The definition of 'pastor' as leader of the congregation is often defined by what he does rather than who he is.  It is the thesis of this paper that the pastor as leader must be a confessor, a spiritual witness to the gospel which he/she proclaims.  Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writings are utilized as ministry and congregational roles are explored.  Also, various twentieth-century theologians and secular authors are cited for the study.
