A theology of spiritual leadership is presented, discussing the scriptural and historical roots of spiritual leadership and describing the spiritual leader in terms of servanthood, empowerment, discernment, spiritual experience, prayer, and sanctification. This thesis tests the degrees of secularity of all New Zealand Methodist ministers by means of a questionnaire and a follow-up interview of a small representative sample.  The results show strong theological polarities, and, on average in comparison with the laity, clergy conservatism on central tenets of faith, a more liberal attitude to peripheral belief matters, and strong liberal tendencies in social and political areas. On-site observations and in-depth interviews of thirteen non-ordained pastors and some of their significant parishioners in five Midwestern dioceses who pioneered these appointments form the basis of this study.  Among the conclusions: most parishes, after an initial period of stressful change, adopted well to this new form of pastoring. This study focuses upon the elders' 'personal faith, knowledge of the doctrine, government, and discipline contained in the Constitution of the Church; and the duties of the office' (G-14.0205). Presbyterians hold the office of elder on an equal basis with the office of minister of Word and Sacrament.  Based upon this equality, this training course reflects the concept of 'team ministry.'  An underlying premise for the course is that a church can only be strong as its leadership.  An examination is conducted of the biblical principles of leadership in both the Old and New Testaments. An exploration is undertaken of the ways in which the Presbyterian system of government embodies the principles of team ministry. Studies of the ways in which adults mature in faith are presented and analyzed.  The result of the research is a five-week training course for newly elected elders. The sample consisted of 235 pastors, 187 spouses, and 167 churches from three Presbyterian denominations: EPC, PCA, and PCUSA.  Churches, pastors, and spouses constitute statistically distinct groups in their perceptions of the churches' ministry toward the pastor and family.  Churches judge their performance best, then pastors, and least impressed are spouses.  Pastors and spouses desire to be ministered to by the church more holistically than the churches desire.  The greatest areas of disappointment by pastors and spouses are not in ministering to the professional role of the pastor, but to the pastor as a person.  Correlations were found between the perception of emotional support and financial support. Included is a study of the training of youth pastors in the Assemblies of God and more specifically at Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God.  Southeastern's prior effectiveness in preparing men and women to be youth pastors is evaluated through surveying alumni who graduated over a twelve-year period.  Others who are experienced in the field of youth ministry were asked to evaluate the youth ministry concentration model. In chapter 1, the significance and aim of the study are stated.  An effort is made to clarify authority in Christianity in chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the authority of the pastor in the church.  The authority of the pastor in the Korean church is dealt with in chapter 4.  The following chapters examine the authority of the pastor in the PCK by means of research and personal interviews (twelve hundred pastors and congregations are included). The local church, which is called to minister both to the world and to its own members, can and should minister to its pastors as well as its members.  The project design around which this study is built involved a four to six-month series of meetings and reflection by local church support committees.  Using a manual, which is included in the thesis, the committees reviewed the four primary relationships which exist between the local church and its pastor.  The pastor is a leader, colleague, employee and friend to the church and its members. Pre- to post-implementation changes were measured in perceptions of pastoral contact, convenience of communication, church and pastoral ministries, and worship attendance.
