The thesis of this paper is twofold: 1) that a trained and working pastoral relations committee in a congregationally governed local church can be effective in resolving conflict between a congregation and pastor; 2) that judicatory personnel can be third-party consultants who train and work with the pastoral relations committee in collaborative intervention. The study brings together the disciplines of theology, history and applied social sciences to analyze and propose appropriate interventions into conflict. It recognizes the particular context of a Baptist congregation and the polity of its denomination. An analysis of the learnings concludes the study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["795851c5-e081-4353-9c00-2c554dd1d015"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134921405759488,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:42:51.763Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:41:24Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:05:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a5cf9df5-24a3-433b-bdbd-8955fbba06e5","accessControl_ssim":["8837d4b4-0e74-43f8-a5c1-8515ca633b1d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping selected lay leaders to become effective leaders in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:41:23Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:56:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3259ac32-1666-4a51-bb04-6af2d78f58a4"],"hasLease_ssim":["234aaf92-79b5-484f-9003-74063ad1cafe"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Doran C McCarty"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Emmanuel Olufemi Akognon"],"keyword_tesim":["Tests and measurements in religion"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Village Baptist Church (Marin City, Calif)","Clergy","Laity","Priesthood, Universal","Church work","Leadership--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project trained and supervised selected lay leaders of the Village Baptist Church of Marin City, California to become effective leaders in the church. This project was designed to put into practice the uniqueness Baptists claim for the priesthood of all believers. If all Christians are priests, then there should be no distinctions between the clergy and laity. The aim of this project was to 'empower' the laity for intentional ministry in the church. Twenty-six people were enlisted for this project. Seven were participants in the ministry training and supervision. Of these seven, three constituted the experiment group and four constituted the control group. The control group was trained but not supervised. The experiment group was supervised for five months after training. The remaining people served as evaluators and support group systems. Those who were both trained and supervised became more effective in ministry than those who were trained but not supervised. The author used tests for measurement and constructed pre-project and post-project evaluations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e59d8a7f-b140-41e1-9d1f-4e98aaa1d973"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132554026287104,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:05:14.054Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:40:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:03:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"927f98c2-6afa-4f0c-a21c-41a4e155ed0c","accessControl_ssim":["ba52b00b-3282-4a1d-99c4-1e6f31c87e9f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The development of clergy-laity ministry relationships: building trust after failure"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:40:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:25:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5007c56e-6ecf-4540-872c-46daed2162ae"],"hasLease_ssim":["e8e2d1e5-9293-4365-8e0f-cbfdd9571136"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jerry M Stubblefield"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ronald D Shepherd"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Trust","Clergy","Mission of the church","Laity","Small groups"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project originates from a need to change long-standing unhealthy patterns of ministry. Research in local church ministry relationships determines how poor relationships affect the mission and purpose of the church. Extensive materials on local church relationships and the theory of ministry relationships are available. However, little practical material on improving relationships is available. The research reveals that the hindrance of local church ministry by poor relationships between clergy and laity is a Protestant-wide problem. Primary resources suggest a biblical and theoretical model for the improvement of ministry relationships. The model proposes small groups which is the nominal group technique. The outcome of the project is the implementation of new communication patterns that build trust."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e59d8a7f-b140-41e1-9d1f-4e98aaa1d973"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132417513226240,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:03:03.865Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:39:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:54:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9aedc832-a62c-400a-a6ff-0deec35dc68e","accessControl_ssim":["fa80f246-895a-43c8-afa9-16e0e3d8b26f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the bi-vocational ministry with focus on American Baptists in New Jersey"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:39:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:39:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8dd8d27-688d-4aa5-af17-ea5eeda23125"],"hasLease_ssim":["0e25aa52-c044-4c60-b977-1d2b9d546548"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Glenn A Koch"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William W LeConey"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Clergy--Salaries, etc","Clergy--Secular employment","Case method","American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The recent inflationary spiral has affected Christian churches by greatly reducing the funds which support traditional ministries. The reductions include the salaries of ordained clergy. At the same time there are trained, ordained ministers who, for varying reasons, work in secular vocations. Some assume the dual responsibility of providing professional leadership to churches while continuing in their present occupation. This study looks at this bi-vocationalism among American Baptist churches in New Jersey and examines whether there is adequate biblical, theological and historical validity to support such a form of ministry. The primary method of research involves research questionnaires, interviews and observations. Other methods include case studies and a library survey. The study concludes that bi-vocationalism has roots in Paul's 'tent-making'. It is consistent with an incarnational theology based on God's involvement in the world through Jesus Christ. It provides trained professionals for the small church. Usually those engaged in it find personal fulfillment and bring special insights and skills to this 'calling'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128114483429376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:54:40.175Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":417,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
