These ceremonies are dynamic and energizing.  They are the deepest level of life where God's presence is celebrated. Ordained and non-ordained church members need to come to grips with the theological implications of the ceremonies and increase skills for public leadership of ceremonies. Barriers which prevent many non-ordained persons from full participation are examined.  The project involved questionnaires, worshops, retreats and an evaluation.  The ministry on worship department worked closely with the pastor.  Self-esteem is one issue that must be taken into account as the congregation seeks to involve the non-ordained in public ceremonies. For fifteen years, American Baptist Churches have used a printed form,  'Church Self-Study of Goals and Leadership Needs', to aid this reflection process.  The purpose of this project was to rewrite the form for the American Baptist Personnel Services.  Information was gained from persons directly acquainted with the document.  These resources included search committees, executive ministers, area ministers and pastors.  Data from each participating group was gathered and analyzed to form the background for the new document of church reflection.  The new form discusses the disciplined and guided thought which takes place when a church deliberately looks at itself -- its being, belief, function and mission. Such models are ineffective in a small church setting.  Yet, there is little information available regarding the power, authority and leadership in small volunteer organizations.  This project uses interviews, observation, surveys and experience to explore the laity-clergy leadership dynamics of small churches.  It finds that: pastors are valued as persons before professionals; key leaders sense and articulate group needs and help the group use resources to meet needs; goals are accomplished by attending to the maintenance of relationships. Twenty appendixes document the process.  A definition of Lutheran ministry, a report on a multi-lingual survey of youth ministers in four countries, a theological statement for youth ministry and a method for improving skills are included. This project developed an eight week adult Sunday school class that explored the roles and expectations of clergy and lay people. The project was designed as a microcosm of the United Methodist connectional and itinerant ministry. It included a district superintendent as a representative of the appointed hierarchy.  These clergy-persons represented a broad spectrum of types of appointments, race, gender and age.  Their formal theological training and theological orientation represented five different seminaries.  Approximately forty hours were spent exploring, testing and attempting to experience a Christian covenant community. The negotiating method is adapted from the Harvard Research Project.  Pastors and lay leaders in three congregations are involved in testing the model.  They meet with a facilitator for five sessions and use two test instruments, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and World View Test Instrument, to facilitate negotiations. Church growth is a product of the cooperative endeavor of a pastor and laymen.  For this project the pastors' Church Study Committee and the laymen's local Church Growth Committee were organized.  Seminars were held and questionnaires were prepared to identify church growth factors and their effect in the local churches.  The pastors' committee evaluated the questionnaires. The results were shared with the Church Growth Committee in each local church.
