This desire to encourage first-time pastors is the heart of this dissertation's work. The dissertation is an attempt to provide assistance to first-time pastors in order to possibly prevent what happened to the writer from happening to them. First-time pastors encounter ministry challenges. these ministerial challenges can be overcome through encouragement received in relationships with seasoned mentors such as directors of missions. After the departure of their long-term pastor, South Church faced internal, communal, and cultural transitions. This project used narrative tools to reconnect the congregation to their biblical, communal and personal faith stories. The three tools were 1) a Lenten-Eastertide sermon series; 2) remembering the church's history using their 250th anniversary banners; and 3) an Appreciative Inquiry process. Through research, ten of the most prevalent crises encountered were identified. For each crisis, situations were analyzed to determine successful pulpit approaches that have proven beneficial to particular pastors in jeopardizing situations. This research found a strong correlation between preaching God's Word and weathering the storms of ministry. The project director researched a sampling of existing pastor search documents and conducted interviews with church members currently or recently involved in the pastor search process for their church.  These interviews provided insight into the interpersonal dynamics at work in the congregations involved and the procedures used in smaller member congregations.  Additional study in curriculum theory helped in the development of a quality guide. The study begins by laying down vital theological and biblical principles. Pertinent Christian and secular literature will be reviewed to discover what is known about the principles and practices common to all selection processes and those dynamics which would be uniquely oriented for associate pastor hiring. This thesis continues by exploring the issues of: ministerial portfolio presentation; candidate profiling; ministry marketing; assessment strategy; and the legal, ethical and financial considerations in quality hiring. A questionnaire will be utilized to survey senior pastors to discover how they approach the entire process of associate pastoral candidates. The author interviewed 13 of the largest Chinese churches in the San Francisco Bay area to discover their candidating process. The importance of support from denominational officials is highlighted.
