By means of a survey among 1,800 clergy in Minnesota, it was found that many clergy came into ministry from an extreme family system. United Methodist clergy in the Mattoon district and lay persons in the Casey United Methodist Church were surveyed to determine the stress and satisfaction they experience.  The target groups apparently were coping well at the time the surveys were administered.  A stress management workshop was conducted for the participants.  Suggestions of ways to cope with stress were shared. The pastors living within the boundaries of the Presbytery of Northern New York completed a test and a questionnaire was submitted to executive presbyters in the Synod of the Northeast.  The author ascertained that burn-out and stress was indeed a problem.  Three specific projects were initiated for evaluation and testing.  They included a retreat, pastoral supervision model and pastoral/clergy support group.
