Drawn from both the theology of hope and those in the field of a psychology of hope, these resources were presented as an avenue for initiating or rekindling hope among clergy.  The research methods employed were both academic and practical.  The latter resource was from a compilation of the work presented at two workshops in the Western Pennsylvania Conference. Mail surveys were sent to 200 Presbyterian Church in America clergymen (and wives), with 275 of the 400 returned.  Seven hypotheses were tested.  Sufficient variance of depressive tendencies with the public was not indicated, nor variance between clergy and wives. Correlation was not sufficiently associated with size of congregation, ministerial position, nor age.  Correlation was significantly correlated to overall health and a network of supporting friends. Questionnaires were sent to 9 Jesuit priests in each of 28 Jesuit colleges in the US, as well as to 6 lay professors and administrators in the same institutions.  Survey results showed markedly low degrees of burnout among the total Jesuit clergy and lay personnel.  Because some psychiatrists have lately treated burnout as an addiction, they found natural medical means ineffective for curing burnout. In the United Church of Christ, the situation is complicatd by an historical no-intrusion policy called autonomy.  This prevents or at least delays any quality intervention.  The author uses his own experience, as well as other resources, to build a workable, creative model of strategies that is offered as a contribution to ministry.  It is at once therapeutic, but suggestive of preventative directions as well. Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities.  Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering. United Methodist clergy in the Mattoon district and lay persons in the Casey United Methodist Church were surveyed to determine the stress and satisfaction they experience.  The target groups apparently were coping well at the time the surveys were administered.  A stress management workshop was conducted for the participants.  Suggestions of ways to cope with stress were shared.
