It analyzes present varied practices used by Lutheran churches to call their pastors, measures attitudes towards their practices, and suggests viable alternatives. The method of study involves an examination of the call-placement process used by six Christian churches in the United States. It also involves data from a sampling survey sent out to 450 Lutheran pastors and congregational presidents. A practical guide (manual), including over 20 actual pastoral epistles, merges the perceptions from the theoretical and technical rationales. The majority of the pastors interviewed visit in hospitals and homes where there is illness or crisis, but not routinely all parishioners. Parishioners want this pastor to visit them regularly, but by appointment. They want the visit to be social. Only half of the parishioners interviewed want or expect the minister to visit to give spiritual guidance."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31bd5819-b5a3-4928-96d5-b581f38b637b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126794702684160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:33:41.535Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:56:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:38:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"13f65b90-9d7a-4c88-ac43-9ed7ff51c4b8","accessControl_ssim":["44080eea-7cc3-46f8-8e9f-db56bd98412c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The United Methodist senior minister's role"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:56:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:42:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["573d82c0-471d-4dc2-ba66-693fb92a8aaf"],"hasLease_ssim":["9908f2ac-806c-4887-bfbc-a36e7c2abda9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Christ Seminary-Seminex"],"advisor_tesim":["Carl H Toelke"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David Ray Finestead"],"publisher_tesim":["Christ Seminary-Seminex"],"subject_tesim":["Decision making","United Methodist Church","Clergy--Office","Clergy","City churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper presents a 'how-to-do method' for decision making concerning the prioritizing of twelve roles for the mid-city United Methodist Church senior minister. The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry. Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner.
