This study took place in Ethiopia and explored the perceptions of the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) leaders’ advice to ensure a biblically based and contextually appropriate leadership transition strategy in the EKHC head office regarding predecessors and successors. It attempted to answer what these leaders perceive will ensure biblically and contextually appropriate leadership transition strategies. At the executive level of leadership in the church, the question of excellence inleadership must be addressed. Some churches have chosen to pursue that excellence viathe means of multiple executive staff leadership in the church. This function looks likemultiple staff members who wield executive leadership ability with a direct report to theSenior Pastor.This dissertation examines cases of churches that utilize this structure ofmultiple executive staff members. Multiple executive leadership in the local church canbe effective when these following four factors are in place: a commitment to the church’svision and senior leadership, clearly defined roles in the ministry team, strategic hiring ofpersonnel, and flexibility of administration. These four factors were present in all of themultiple executive staff teams interviewed. From 1867 to 1952, missionaries provided leadership to Wenzhou churches in the form of pastoral leadership to individual congregations. By contrast, contemporary churches of Wenzhou have been adhering to a system of patriarchal administration over a number of congregations, including the assignment of volunteer lay-preachers who are not expected to carry out any pastoral duties. This model of church leadership is found to have many problems that hindered the development of churches. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how to build up pastoral leadership in Wenzhou. The emphasis of pastoral leadership is for pastors to lead and nurture churches. Through their leadership, preaching, pastoral care, visitation, teaching, counseling, discipleship training, evangelism, etc., they enable their flocks to grow spiritually. Since churches in Wenzhou are unique in their geography and history, it is impracticable to import entirely western modes of pastoral leadership into Wenzhou. In response, the researcher interviewed sixteen congregants and six pastors from churches in the Washington, DC area about how they conceptualize and engage with pastoral authority. The researcher analyzed the interviews using a modified grounded theory approach. Analysis suggested congregants have an overreliance on a pastor's personal authority and an underdeveloped conception of a pastor's role authority. It examined the correlation between the pastoral leadership demonstrated by Chaplain Wright and established leadership expressions and patterns.  This examination involved the review of many personal documents, review of his military record and interviews conducted with individuals from congregations he served as a civilian pastor. The role is commonly referred to as pastor, shepherd or teacher.  Ordained ministry often comes at the cost of emotional and physical turmoil in the life of a pastor.  This can result in ordained ministers questioning their abilities, their own personal success and even their call into ordained ministry.  In this project seven ministers are interviewed.  They reflect on their decisions to leave or remain in the role as an ordained minister. I proposed that doulos be translated slave based on the Pauline assessment and modeling of this biblical doctrine.  Relevant data was gathered using a mixed-method approach to equip PR to parallel two motifs or models: slaves of Christ with slaves to sin who support the prosperity gospel heresy.  The slave language was challenging as PR consists of offspring of American slaves. Yet PR leaders agreed to participate in this project to dispel misunderstanding and encourage an examination of biblical teaching on this avoided topic.
