It deals mainly with the death of a pastor's wife and the pastoral care received during the dying process.  It also includes interviews with ten individuals who experienced the death of a loved one during a period of active ministry to a congregation as a pastor. Both quantitative and qualitative data were derived from a six-session (15 hour) seminar with eight religious professionals, half ordained and half not.  The first three sessions taught a thorough concept of codependency and integrated it with psychodynamics and theology.  The last three sessions provided a process to look for evidences of codependency in personal ministry activities. The conclusions of the study were that these pastors have a strong sense of call, have a strong relationship with their ecclesiastical body, and do their specialized ministry as a continuing incarnation of Christ.  These specialists do not decrease in pastoral identity while in specialized ministry. It was hypothesized that a change in orientation would occur in midlife, precipitated by a crisis and that change would occur in three stages: rule-following/conforming, rule-dismissing/questioning and value-realizing/integrating. Two studies were performed with 62 male ministers.  An attitude survey demonstrated no difference in the ethical orientation by age or denomination but self-reports of midlife crisis were significantly related to the questioning stage.
