A sample of 17 couples attended four workshops over five weeks. Training in family of origin issues, the nuclear family emotional system, triangulation, and differentiation of self was combined with teaching on a biblical theology of marriage and exposure to Abraham's genogram. The PAIR (Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships) Inventory and a questionnaire were administered. What sets clergy apart is their heritage of incorporating depression into their journey of faith and the practice of ministry. The author conducted a research project on biblical accounts of despair and development of Christian thought in the concepts of accidie and dark night of the soul. The extended essay compares the decline of the American church to the five stages of death described by Kübler-Ross.
