It attempts to determine whether a better system of pastoral care for pastors might minimize instances of negative transition and related pastoral problems.  The study includes a survey of relevant biblical passages and a fairly extensive literature review.  The field work surveys a representation of solo and senior pastors, district superintendents, and denominational leaders. Yet every year in every denomination, another minister leaves the ministry due to moral failure or burnout.  The purpose of this thesis is to explore the controllable factors which effect longevity in ministry.  Through a combination of research including a biblical/theological and literature review as well as survey research, statistical analysis and descriptive research, this thesis proposes that there are certain controllable factors which, when implemented, make leaving ministry less likely.  The result of this thesis/project was the production of a document entitled 'Ministry for Life' which contains the information gathered from the research listed above. It was hypothesized that Jungian Personality Type Theory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator could be effective means for enhancing students' self-understanding.  A teaching program was designed to study the effects.  A quasi-experimental method and a portfolio assessment of students learning were employed.  The findings indicated affirmative but not conclusive evidence.
