The analysis of institutional codependency on the relationship between a pastor and his church is the major focus of this project. Participants who report a high score in one of Erikson's stages are expected to report a high score as a result of the influence of religious tradition, for that stage. The Seventh-day Adventist church has its own unique culture, traditions, conservative principles and philosophy that are grounded in the 28 fundamental beliefs of the church. A survey was distributed to the clergy of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to assess their experience of the dark night of the soul. Interior influences like struggles with sexual issues, low self-esteem, and moral conflicts contributed to a greater experience of the dark night of the soul. Data was collected through a written survey of pastors and through interviews with eight pastors involved in the same group.  The research demonstrated that they were drawn together by a core unity of belief and similarity of pastoral calling.  Their longevity as a group has been primarily through the group size, the nurturing of relationships, a baseline of common belief, and a commonality of job description. This study presents perspectives on self-awareness, identifies instruments for self-awareness and elaborates on the history, research conclusions and the benefits of self-awareness using the Arno Profile System.  A case study is presented to provide a report of the specific work with ten clergy and their responses to the Arno Profile System.
