Working within a Free Church polity, it then suggests there is much the church can to do connect its pastors to the lines of support, authorization and accountability they need for healthier ministry. Its six chapters offer:  1. an introduction on the need to think in expanded terms about our connections; 2. a definition and description of pastoral isolation; 3. a history of the principle of autonomy and its misunderstanding; 4. an analysis of individualism and social virtue, and the personal and communal power needed to balance them; 5. a covenantal ecclesiology upon which to base its recommendations; and 6. a church-wide plan to provide the connecting elements required, the hallmark of which is a thorough recasting of the role and structure of UCC Associations. The author shares the need for developing systems of support and accountability for district superintendents.  She demonstrates the model she used to address these needs in her own ministry and the difference it made in the way she carried out the ministry of superintending. The intention is to identify and apply biblical and leadership principles for pastors encountering faith stretching periods of ministry such as times of change, conflict, and crisis. The  project will seek to guide the local pastor in personal growth and maturity in Christ during stressful seasons of ministry. A personal guidebook is included. The pastoral model in this project is the Apostle Paul as he provided leadership to the church in Corinth, particularly through the letter of 2 Corinthians. The project surveys literature reviewing issues facing pastors. The author surveyed 900 churches in five evangelical Canadian congregational-based denominations, covering denominational leaders, the senior pastor, and a key lay leader from each church. Pastor Care proposes that with denominational leaders acting as a catalyst, lay leaders can create a culture of care among local church leaders and assist pastors to find a mentor.
