This report highlights six disciplines from Benedictine and Ignatian spirituality, prayer and scripture, the divine office, humility, hospitality, discernment and the examen as tools for modern clergy and explores the benefits of the disciplines in deepening, strengthening, and tending the spiritual life in the often unbalanced life in the church. Western culture's bias toward objectivity casts aspersion on the subjective evidences of a pastor's call. This project focused on a group of preachers who gathered to engage scripture in creative ways and then to continue practices individually. The author explored ways in which intentionally making time for spiritual practices affects the preacher as well as the sermon. The research involved a twelve-week study of a lectionary group of preachers, interviews of numerous preachers outside the group, and journal entries. Pre-tests and post-rests provided measurable observations. The literature focuses on spiritual self-care for ministers, overlooking the value and simplicity of the pastor caring for himself physically. In order to help pastors sustain leadership in local church ministry, physical self-care practices were identified which contributed to pastors sustaining themselves in leadership. The findings of this study were that pastors who engaged in physical self-care practices may be better equipped to endure stress and challenges in ministry. Effective pastors lead under God's truth, by God's grace and in covenant with God and people. These healthy connections result in leaders growing and learning even as they lead in the most challenging contexts. One solution has been to prescribe the spiritual practice of Sabbath-keeping. Unfortunately, this raises multiple issues for the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) pastor. Therefore, the central question that guided this project was: How do SDA pastors practice and experience the Sabbath? The goal was to gain a thick, in-depth description of Sabbath-keeping. In order to accomplish this the project's strategy was rooted in a phenomenological form of research, namely the qualitative interview. The research question is to determine the extent to which students who took the 'minister's spiritual life' course increased in spiritual maturity. Two instruments were developed to measure this: a qualitative focus group study and a quantitative survey. These examined whether the course: enabled them to recognize their hindrances, assisted in overcoming them, helped develop a plan to mature spiritually, and motivated them to implement their plan. The method of study was qualitative, using a small group structure of four pastors in the United Methodist tradition.  It applied the use of interview, journal, and questionnaire.  The results showed a marked improvement in the perceived awareness of one's felt presence with God.
