Ministries that could last several years end up lasting just a few years due to unmet expectations and the inability to resolve conflict. In this work, the author contends that long-term ministry is valuable. Ministries lasting ten years or more are normally based on mutual trust between pastor and congregation. The depth of relationship brings trust and stability to a church unknown in shorter pastorates. The literature supports this in both religious and secular fields. Those entering ministry need to be well prepared for the rigors of relationship building, making themselves vulnerable and open, while still maintaining a level of trust and professionalism. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is comprised of over 500 churches and is benefiting greatly from the dedicated service of pastors who are daring to pay the price of long-term service. Their insights were a primary source of research in determining what relational factors are paramount in the building of a marathon ministry. Consulted also were the executive and regional ministers who from their perspectives add much as they consult with search committees, pastors, and congregations in crisis. They serve on the front lines of ministry and understand well the pressures that go along with building a significant relational ministry. Several theological themes were discussed under the heading of the struggle between the sin-led life and the Spirit-led life. Such subjects as submission, partnership, and shepherding were viewed through these lenses. This aided greatly in discerning the primary issues facing churches and pastors as they pursue significant ministry together. As a result of the research, this study should assist the CABC in ministering more effectively to its pastors and churches, most specifically in the recommendations to search committees and in providing guidelines to pastors and leadership boards in careful and proper treatment of each other."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131376041328640,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:30.640Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:15:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:41:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ddb7417a-2c9f-4741-9b2a-aacd3593d52e","accessControl_ssim":["3733ce96-24a7-44b3-b4ce-1e5f6b5c63e7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Clergy spiritual health: an examination and critique of the spiritual habits of appointed clergy in the local church setting in the Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:15:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:28:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["edfaad2a-50eb-4653-b90d-b6060b52d2d2"],"hasLease_ssim":["c12a7c20-0bc5-48d5-b86b-160d3f5defb7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John C Robbins"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Clergy","Methodist Church","Spiritual life--Christianity","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this practicum/project is to determine the correlation between one's spiritual discipline habits and his/her attitude and approach to ministry in the local church. The project compiles information collected from an anonymous survey distributed among local church clergy in the Central Texas Conference. The practicum/project was begun in January, 2005, after the survey had been created the previous November. Surveys were collected over a six week period and then the information was tallied over the next three months. Those completing the requested information were told verbally or in writing that it was an anonymous survey and they were not to sign it anywhere on the three-page questionnaire. There is a problem in the personal lives of contemporary ministers, which surfaces in the forms of addiction, burnout, infidelity, and such. At the root of the problem is a need for spiritual intimacy. This need merits an investigation and reflection on spiritual intimacy: definition of, challenges to, and a model for. The thesis of this study is that the beloved disciple is an appropriate model for the spiritual intimacy of pastors. The project tested the validity and application of the thesis through selected interviews of pastors. The method of research consisted of investigating the epithet the beloved disciple and the pericopes outlining his mentions in the text. In addition, other literary sources were consulted to determine the dynamics of Christian spirituality and the psychology of intimacy. The project engaged fifteen pastors--seven active and eight inactive--in a spiritual intimacy interview. The project probed the realities of the spiritually intimate life, through a juxtaposition of these ministers and the beloved disciple's spiritual intimacy model."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131606688202752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:50:10.601Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:12:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:17:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43cb8e7b-3956-4117-83a4-3adc8e6589d1","accessControl_ssim":["d4db4879-f984-4653-bca7-5730da2ae71b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An interpretive inquiry into the lived experience of being a preacher in Easter season"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:12:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:06:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2d1c09cb-d4f6-4579-9f6a-803af8834114"],"hasLease_ssim":["ffbec4b4-19bc-4c33-83dd-93187acb055c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Murray E Laverty"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["Easter","Clergy--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This interpretive inquiry explores the lived experience of being a preacher in the six weeks of Easter. A subtext for the study is wrestling with the question, 'What does it mean to be faithful as a Christian preacher in this time and culture?' A critical review of the purposes of preaching is offered and a series of commonly held expectations or intentions of Christian preaching are clarified. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the preacher/researcher engages seven mainline Protestant preachers in an intensive six-week study of their lived experience of being a preacher in an Easter season. This study helps broaden our understanding of what it means to be a preacher in an Easter season, the praxis of preaching and dynamics at work in being a preacher. In addition, it offers implications for preachers, preaching and being faithful in this post-modern cultural context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721135842000896,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:17:03.946Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:30:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"47cd4bba-d20a-4b48-9e37-26e6f805f981","accessControl_ssim":["dedb441e-1322-4c92-9517-9bee4506a14c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["No other way: improving the spirituality of lay leadership in a local United Methodist Church by instituting a regular personal devotional life in the Wesleyan context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a064b68c-13d2-4199-8f35-e13719a2de3f"],"hasLease_ssim":["473f4efc-5ac3-41e8-9b51-cf7035c0c9c2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Larry Wood"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timo O Karvonen"],"keyword_tesim":["Wesleyanism"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Clergy","Methodist Church","Spiritual life--Christianity","United Methodist Church","Lay Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The key to Christian ministry is the spirituality of each individual believer. Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. The Bible, prayer, Holy Communion, Christian conferencing, and fasting are still basics for personal spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134140750364672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:27.271Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:01:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3baf3425-27d9-4cb1-9061-6442532f7376","accessControl_ssim":["aeedaafb-0334-4c9e-a1e1-b31ab334f8f2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Spiritual transformation of Christian leaders through biblical application of spiritual phenomenon in the Christian church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:01:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:51:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dad6ded9-7b21-4fba-ac1d-65b03e3a1d07"],"hasLease_ssim":["60ebd635-cf09-468e-adf8-dda845200a96"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larita M Hand"],"publisher_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Spiritual formation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In this project the Christian leader learns how to actualize transformation through a biographical lens into the transformational leadership of Jesus Christ as encountered in spiritual phenomena from His birth to resurrection.
