As the Chairperson of its Order, the author examined the question: how can the Order of Elders be a viable body which will increase the number of elders in its activities and nurture them spiritually?  First the author explores the history of peer accountability and the creation of the Order of Elders based on the Wesleyan tradition and theology/doctrine.  Then the author presents a case study from the author's own experiences. The author studied clergy-artists, burn-out and renewal, and the artistic heritage of Charles Wesley. The study used semi-structured interviews with four pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America and two from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.  The review of literature examined scripture, Christian literature and secular literature regarding how leaders lead staff teams.  The analysis focused on three areas: how to build trust, what understanding of relational systems are helpful in leading a team, and how personal spiritual growth affects team leadership.  The study found that trust is established as the leader practices consistency of character, motivating the team toward a clear vision, developing good communication, mutual accountability, and building an atmosphere of authentic joy.  Church staff teams were often strengthened and trust built through difficult situations. The study also found that it is vital for effective leaders to understand relational systems.  Finally, the study concluded that spiritual health and vitality are essential for lead pastors to be effective.  Effective leaders have consistent and vital times in Bible study and prayer. Data was collected through a written survey of pastors and through interviews with eight pastors involved in the same group.  The research demonstrated that they were drawn together by a core unity of belief and similarity of pastoral calling.  Their longevity as a group has been primarily through the group size, the nurturing of relationships, a baseline of common belief, and a commonality of job description. A quesionnaire was used to ascertain the degree to which pastors and lay leaders depend on the Spirit. While today's leadership lacks a full understanding of the Holy Spirit, there appears to be a growing openness to explore the depths of this seemingly neglected, but equally authoritative part of the Trinity. A questionnaire was disseminated and the results indicate that spiritual vitality is considered essential to doing the job of a Christian Navy Medicine chaplain.  The overwhelming majority of participants also indicated that practicing time management and self-care are extremely important. A case study was made of ten New Zealand Open Brethren churches that were experiencing healthy numerical growth. It cannot be assumed that the pastor has completed his development, but further intentional effort must be pursued. This project developed a lesson plan for pastors in a small group setting which defined spiritual development, established three biblical elements of spiritual development and its theological foundation. The author researched the theoretical, sociological, theological, and biblical perspectives of spirituality with application. Also, the author presented diverse exercises to implement for spiritual development and incentives for engaging the process. What would it take for a congregation to experience that type of revitalization?  Will a 'transformed' leader produce a 'transformed' church?  Can the traditional disciplines of prayer, reading scripture, and experiencing true solitude and true community make a difference in the lives of busy, proud, 'know it all' Christians?  I am convinced that significant spiritual transformation is possible in the church today -- and I have already begun to experience it at First Presbyterian Church.  The most critical factor so far in transformation for this church has been personal transformation in the life of its pastor.  This project attempted to promote spiritual transformation in the church by recognizing and supporting a continued process of transformation in the life of the pastor and by utilizing a family systems approach to change. Major steps included self-awareness and living into the person God has created; living into the particularities of one's giftedness and situation; utilizing long-held spiritual traditions of prayer, solitude, community and spiritual direction; living as a non-anxious presence and recognizing that one individual's change within the system forces the system itself to change.
