Four needs were discovered during a meeting of bivocational pastors.  Pastoral care, family time, preaching and time management were addressed in separate workshops which lasted one full day each.  All of the workshops examined the time problem for the bivocational pastor in his roles as pastor and as secular employee.  The project found that much more attention must be directed to the dual roles of the bivocational pastor. The reductions include the salaries of ordained clergy.  At the same time there are trained, ordained ministers who, for varying reasons, work in secular vocations.  Some assume the dual responsibility of providing professional leadership to churches while continuing in their present occupation.  This study looks at this bi-vocationalism among American Baptist churches in New Jersey and examines whether there is adequate biblical, theological and historical validity to support such a form of ministry.  The primary method of research involves research questionnaires, interviews and observations. Other methods include case studies and a library survey. The study concludes that bi-vocationalism has roots in Paul's 'tent-making'. It is consistent with an incarnational theology based on God's involvement in the world through Jesus Christ.  It provides trained professionals for the small church. The project sought to enhance and expand the ministry of Faith Mountain Fellowship Church.  The church selected an associate pastor, minister of music and missions, minister of adult education, and a children's director who conducted ministry events applicable to their positions and ministries.  The ministry objectives of the participants were realized by planning, executing, and evaluating ministry events which improved their skills by in-service training.  Church objectives were accomplished by involving individuals in leadership roles and providing them with opportunities for significant ministry achievements. Information gathered was used to develop a workshop manual in the areas of time management, pastoral counseling and educational opportunities.
