A decade of study led to a national Pronouncement on ministry issues in 2005 which suggested ways to move into the future while taking into account the remarkable diversity of faith communities within the denomination.The broad range of ecclesiologies, with their corresponding theologies of ministry, has made the denominational conversation rich, but it has also made the task of coming to consensus on ministry issues challenging. In order to gain a better understanding of our practices in preparation for creating new guidelines for authorization, one directive of the Pronouncement was to \"pay attention to our theologies of ministry in the UCC, especially ordained ministry.\"This project applies an ecclesiological typology to the descriptive language in current local and national denominational guidelines for identifying, preparing, and authorizing candidates for ministry, for the purpose of comparing the preferences which are revealed in them. Preferences are arrayed, and similarities and discrepancies between local and national materials are noted. In particular, this project observes whether or not the full range of ecclesiological diversity of the United Church of Christ is reflected in the guidelines for authorization, what differences exist between the sets of guidelines in this respect, and what the significance of those differences may be. Jean Clandinin and F. Michael Connelly's three-dimensional narrative inquiry space as a template, the author reflects theologically and pedagogically upon twenty years' experience with biblical languages at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. The theological emphases focus upon the theology of the learner, as shaped by the imago Dei of Genesis 1; the theology of the teacher, as embodied in Corinthians 9; and the theology of learning, as envisioned in 1 Corinthians 12.The pedagogical focus critiques the efficacy of Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and the practicality of Randall Buth's listening comprehension approach to learning biblical languages. Buth's work builds upon the conclusions of second-language acquisition theorists and teachers Stephen Krashen, James Asher, and Harris Winitz.The author concludes that the work of both Gardner and Buth must be expanded to serve the theological goals of Western Theological Seminary. Gardner' s multiple intelligences theory can shape both how one learns and what one learns. Many of these churches are in a declining status, often due to the removal of the historic gospel from the pulpits. It will take preaching the historic gospel of Jesus Christ from the pulpit once again to revitalize these churches. Towards that end, this project was undertaken to help cast a vision for revitalizing mainline churches and to encourage evangelical pastors to consider pursuing pulpits in mainline churches, to replant the gospel seed, and to revitalize these churches in order to reach communities for Christ. This thesis is targeted at church replanters and church replanter coaches. This has led to a large void in leadership within churches and ministries as well as a disconnection between the local church and seminaries. During the first phase of the project, its director researched the topic in order to provide content for a workshop intended to equip a selected group of Georgia Baptist pastors with revival preparation skills. The second phase included developing the workshop curriculum. The third phase was the implementation of the actual five-session workshop. Session 1 required two hours, and sessions 2 through 5 met for ninety minutes. A review of leadership, adult learning and cultural change literature, semi-structured open-ended interviews and a focus group provided data that was analyzed using Grounded Theory to identify five essential leadership qualities and competencies. Equipping in four of these proved to reduce the gap. Among the key findings: the existence of a gap was confirmed and leadership qualities were deemed more important than competencies.
