The desired outcome of this programwas to help Haitian pastors better appreciate the art of preaching, be more passionateabout sermon preparation, and be able to identify a process for sermon preparation. Inaddition, on a broader level, the project evaluated whether this program improved theirattitude toward expository sermon preparation and increased their confidence by using astandardized process.A well-balanced sermon is clear, true, relevant, and biblical. These arenecessities for a sermon to accomplish its purpose of changing lives to the glory of God.A link exists between satisfactory sermon preparation and its delivery. Preparation priorto delivery was considered in this project. The value of preparation was highlightedbecause all good preachers should take this characteristic seriously. Preparation is theaction or process of making ready or being made ready for use or consideration.Clarity and effective communication are two important characteristics ofdeveloping a well-balanced and clear sermon. The flow of a sermon depends on bothclarity and effective communication skills. Therefore, these skills were addressed duringthe evaluation of this homiletics training seminar manual.Commitment is necessary for producing well-balanced sermons. Otherwise, congregants will become undernourished because preachers lack the skill to prepare anddeliver expository and well-balanced sermons.A questionnaire and two focus groups were part of the evaluation process forthis project. The pre-survey evaluated those who participated in the training seminar. Itprovided a foundational understanding of their ability to develop expository preachingskills. The post-survey measured their progress after being exposed to the training."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130250324738048,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:37.073Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:34:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:05:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a8ed6ee5-6140-4591-9164-7b965901c55d","accessControl_ssim":["c5e7f9f6-54d2-48e8-9c15-68d32854286c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Pastoral Care Manual to Raise Awareness of Multicultural Death and Dying Rituals at Gwinnett Medical Center, Lawrenceville, Georgia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:34:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:01:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["499f4752-204a-4a40-8e8c-99ab17933a35"],"hasLease_ssim":["4d04602a-8b87-4141-a6af-8eda094b93be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Peter Kendrick"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Georgia"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Among the pastoral care services offered at GMC, an examination of many hospital manuals showed a lack of information and resources on death and dying rituals and faith practices, especially for those with focus on the four leading religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. A manual that centered on these four religious groups, along with providing information on religious death and dying rituals, would not only be helpful for new intern Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) chaplains and staff chaplains, but would also benefit the interdisciplinary medical staff in helping them treat patients and families with respect and dignity. In order to complete this project, the project director examined research in the field of pastoral care on the beliefs and rituals of four leading religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. She also investigated significant time studying how to design and write a manual. The result was a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, manual about these four religions that focused on their history, beliefs, teachings, practices, and death and dying rituals. 4) El pastor hispano debe desarrollar nuevas capacidades pastorales ajustadas a la cultura de la iglesia hispana de Los Ángeles."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1837353115156742144,"timestamp":"2025-07-11T12:21:16.094Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:32:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"148152d2-7d74-4bf9-94c7-a91b2ec40fde","accessControl_ssim":["f9a62a89-e6b3-4574-9030-058fecb1b903"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching Christ From Vietnamese Proverbs And Folk Poetry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:31:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:43:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["66cc761e-e2eb-490d-be35-cd6182f42c93"],"hasLease_ssim":["2d7e53ad-6a46-49d7-bf5e-3649c0f61cce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Hy K. However, following the missiological breakthrough of the Second Vatican Council, the Church of Christ, which is by nature missionary, is fully present in all legitimate local assemblies united with their pastors. Today, Africa, Asia, and Latin America have the largest Christian communities and produce an increasing number of missionaries. Nevertheless, the contemporary global migration and the resulting multicultural societies challenge the priestly formation of these new missionaries. To confront this contemporary challenge, the Congregation of the mission (The Vincentians), Province of Nigeria realizes the need to develop a formation curriculum that emphasizes the overall human development of the candidates for the priesthood and ensuring that preaching and mission in multicultural settings is a priority. Therefore, this study undertakes an examination of the current formation curriculum concerning how it promotes the self-awareness of the missionaries and their ability to understand cultural differences. It examines postcolonial theories regarding the self-awareness of priests. Furthermore, it studies narrative preaching to the extent that it benefits multicultural preaching. Moreover, the research establishes that adequate preparation for multicultural preaching needs a reframing of the Vincentian formation. This process will ultimately link the human formation of the priests to the missiological purpose of preaching in multicultural settings. Consequently, this study recommends rethinking the formation program and the formation faculty. It provides a framework and practical suggestions for an extended and improved curriculum in forming the Nigerian Vincentian priests."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130117961940992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:30.842Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:28:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c117a777-ead9-41b5-9ee6-44c49c34787f","accessControl_ssim":["70dfb34f-a866-48df-809b-857377a8a4f4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Theological Reflection: A Preaching Preparation Tool For Deacon Formation In The Archdiocese Of Seattle"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:28:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:40:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7d2204f7-23db-4410-8fa0-3fe1663006ee"],"hasLease_ssim":["6a2b02f0-233b-4be9-9fbd-b235a09ef236"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["William T. The chapter covers a brief overview of liturgical preaching, the problem with creating grounded preaching, and the unique qualities of deacons as liturgical preachers in addressing this problem with the guidance of theological reflection. Chapter Two introduces theological reflection as practical theology and a preaching preparation tool that encourages a dialogue between human experience and Church Traditions (Sacred Scripture, liturgy, beliefs, and teachings). Then, the chapter presents the heart of the project: creating a new unit for the homiletics curriculum in the deacon formation program in collaboration with a small cohort of diocesan deacons.Chapter Five presents the final version of the new unit for the homiletics program, which was presented to the Archdiocese of Seattle (the Vicar of Clergy, the Director of the Deacon Formation Program, and the homiletics instructor)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130323083329536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:46.461Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:25:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"45583d7a-9da1-46a3-9351-0862e9c9bb99","accessControl_ssim":["8872fb97-47d3-4079-af65-9d8bf9158e60"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Participatory Strength-Based Review of the Flexible Model of Training for Salvation Army Officers in the Finland and Estonia Territory"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:25:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:08:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c8b60053-6f25-4a58-bc3a-6aaee5586ff3"],"hasLease_ssim":["3452189f-abfa-4a42-ba1c-bd591b02b9cc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Krause D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Finland","Estonia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Geraldine Leah Lindholm"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational change","Christian education--Teaching methods","Bible. The passing years brought changes within The Salvation Army and in the surrounding culture that impacted the new training program. Surface cracks began to show as challenges arose in a number of areas: balance, supervision, curriculum and fellowship. The need to perform a comprehensive review of the flexible training model was evident. A participatory, strength-based review was conducted using, firstly, a focus group of five officers who shared their diverse experience of officer training. Secondly, an anonymous participant survey was sent out to all officers who had been trained in the flexible training model. Fifteen of the possible twenty-two responded, sharing their perception of the strengths and challenges of the flexible training model, and shared potential ways to make improvements. Eight important components related to a strong flexible training model were identified. These became the building blocks for a renewed flexible model of officer training through a three-year implementation plan. This portfolio was written as a journey, weaving my personal leadership development, biblical leadership models, contemporary leadership theory, and participant action research into a celebration of leadership development within The Salvation Army in the Finland and Estonia Territory."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133496114151424,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:12.499Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:25:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:14:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"235c9245-9747-4419-932c-18849b91dc3a","accessControl_ssim":["1bb86af0-a96f-482a-805c-1608e707e6f0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Encouragement for the small church: Equipping rectors for fruitfulness in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:25:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:10:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bdaf345c-dc03-4a0d-a680-513c7d4aeb2e"],"hasLease_ssim":["f2382090-4014-4b97-a84c-042f55ff553f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Pastoral ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Constantine Campbell Ph.D.","Martin Crain D.Min.","William Donahue Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In God’s providence and design, small is normal, and may in fact bring significant strengths. However, no prior research has investigated the distinctive dynamics and challenges faced by rectors of smaller parishes in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, and despite extensive training pathways there is very little leadership development that focuses specifically upon the small church. This mixed-methods research project integrates theological and sociological insights and discoveries in order to equip and encourage these servants of Christ to persevere in fruitful ministry over the long term. This dissertation presents a complete biblical theology of fruitfulness. Coupling this to the “Robinson-Knox” ecclesiology imbibed by nearly all Sydney Anglican rectors, a “purpose-of-churching” scale is derived to help stimulate theologically consistent models of ministry. At the heart of this project, the Nominal Group Technique is used to generate a list of the Top 7 challenges encountered by a pool of experienced small-church rectors. In light of this robust list along with critical insights from the secondary literature, four follow-up interviews are conducted on location. This pilot research project includes major findings in three key areas. The full, biblical definition of ministry fruitfulness protects and encourages the small-church pastor, especially when tied to the proper purposes of churching. A perceptive analysis of typical small-church culture arising from the secondary literature equips the rector to lead in ways indigenous to actual church size. At the heart, the Top 7 list of small-church challenges renders a “thick” diagnosis widely applicable by such rectors to their ministry settings. As this project concludes, a fresh, rigorous, semi-linear coaching framework for emerging and established rectors serving in small Anglican parishes is proposed for initial implementation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717219622453248,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:14:49.148Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bb49ba0c-f19d-4adf-96db-3243bc99bc8e","accessControl_ssim":["af9ba7af-2675-4f23-a631-14e53552bd73"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Initial Formation for Interculturality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:31:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fa95f6a6-1480-4501-9a1b-124b71431958"],"hasLease_ssim":["0629aed1-f909-489b-b627-0c38be03bbee"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Roger Schroeder SVD Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The purpose of it was to test to what extent interculturality is vital and essential to the Dehonian charism, and how it can be effectively implemented within Priests of the Sacred Heart initial formation in the United States. Because this project deals with experience, culture, and tradition, the author has decided to employ the method of practical theology of James and Evelyn Whitehead. The Whiteheads’ method encourages reflection upon these three elements of life, experience, culture, and tradition, and brings them into correlation to the moment of implementation. The result of this profound reflection and discernment emerges in a pastoral response. Consequently, the three elements, the experience of the members of the US Province, culture, and the tradition evolved in the Dehonian heritage, brought to correlation have emerged in some practical remarks and resolutions regarding initial formation as a pastoral response."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129523652132864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:17:04.064Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:24:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43cb137e-bc08-4df9-8fd2-34cfe13d86c0","accessControl_ssim":["0c32cf76-d537-4d39-a0a4-028cb98f4b34"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Connoisseurship: Using Adult Learning To Engage Preaching In Deacon Formation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:06:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["39d4a745-2fec-4280-b9f0-e47a3f29a4fb"],"hasLease_ssim":["2470f7d3-5c25-4ee1-a79f-db777d62a127"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah L Wilhelm D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bernardin, Cynthia Bavaria"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Theology, Practical","Christian education--Teaching methods","Clergy--Training of","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis project offers a reflective practice-based learning tool to engage preaching experience—from the hearing side of the event—early in diaconal formation to build connoisseurship of effective preaching as the logical prerequisite to engaging the event as preacher. Chapter One proposes connoisseurship as a fruitful metaphor for building an appreciation for what makes for effective and transformative preaching with its slow, steady, and ongoing practice of tasting and reflecting. Chapter Two invites adult learning theory—and the burgeoning field of transformative learning theory born of it—into the conversation to inform both the structure and content of the reflective practice pages that are the building blocks of the thesis project intervention. In conversation with the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States, the chapter offers a preliminary list of key principles salient to the pedagogical design of the project intervention. Chapter Three brings in the lens of practical theology with its consistent starting point in everyday lived practice and experience to sharpen the focus toward the deep faith context of this thesis project. The faith practices of preaching within the context of Eucharist and teaching preaching within the context of a deacon formation program suggest additional site-specific pedagogical concerns. The elements of a site-specific instructional design are now in place. Chapter Four details the thesis project learning intervention. The chapter outlines the purpose and process of the preparatory research that resulted in the project catalogue of characteristics and quotations, and it provides a thick description of diaconal formation in the Diocese of Evansville, with special attention to the role of Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, Evansville’s partner in diaconal formation. An annotated example of a weekly reflective practice page and an analysis of its components relative to the site-specific pedagogical principles proposed in Chapter Three completes the chapter.Chapter Five presents and analyzes the qualitative data collected over the twenty-three weeks of the project with respect to both aggregate and individual participant trajectories toward connoisseurship of effective preaching.
