He bases this assertion on results of interviews conducted in three midwestern seminaries.  He demonstrates that an intercultural approach to seminary formation is consistent with church documents on seminary training, as well as with contemporary theology.  The author explains at length the essential cultural categories necessary for gaining an understanding of cultural difference, which is the key to intercultural communication. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews conducted with interns and supervisors.  Interviews were reviewed for common themes and any correspondence between data gathered and classic homiletic training and New Testament preaching. Working within a Free Church polity, it then suggests there is much the church can to do connect its pastors to the lines of support, authorization and accountability they need for healthier ministry. Its six chapters offer:  1. an introduction on the need to think in expanded terms about our connections; 2. a definition and description of pastoral isolation; 3. a history of the principle of autonomy and its misunderstanding; 4. an analysis of individualism and social virtue, and the personal and communal power needed to balance them; 5. a covenantal ecclesiology upon which to base its recommendations; and 6. a church-wide plan to provide the connecting elements required, the hallmark of which is a thorough recasting of the role and structure of UCC Associations. The model was developed to meet the challenge of preparing individuals for the preaching ministry. Thirty students attended three-hour classes each Saturday for sixteen weeks.
