Disease frequently occurs when a patient's lifestyle is not in harmony with his/her attitudes, values and beliefs.  This study explores ways in which physicians and clergy can work together to foster wholistic health for patients.  The University of Michigan, Department of Family Practice has employed a full-time pastoral counselor/ethicist to further the cooperation between clergy and physicians.  Through a training program focused on counseling skills, clergy and physicians have developed comfortable working relationships. Four students enrolled in a 1/2 unit CPE course are researched in a quasi-experimental design focusing on selected roles and skills.  A pre- and post-test questionnaire and video-taped simulated supervisory sessions are used to identify growth.  Results are mixed, although directions for further inquiry are noted.  The curriculum is presented in detail and implications for teaching pastoral supervision to parish clergy are described.
