The results of a survey are presented regarding some chaplains' beliefs regarding spirituality and medicine, their practices, and how these are related to CPE training. The author reviews complementary and alternative medicine to suggest resources for expanding chaplaincy perspectives and presents a chart of complementary spiritual practices. This paper addresses the need for persons in Clinical Pastoral Education to examine the issues of shame, guilt and forgiveness--both in the themselves and their patients. The author's CPE experience during a two-year residency at a state psychiatric hospital and a general hospital in Kokomo, IN, led her to the view that these are issues needing to be addressed more directly than they are presently. CPE students were observed to struggle with transference and countertransference issues resulting from their own personal histories in which shame and guilt played a part, with resulting impact upon interactions with patients, staff, and health professionals. Distorted perception caused by the dynamics of shame and guilt hinders the capacity of person to be agents of healing and forgiveness. The project summarizes eighty articles from the literature, the author's reading of 100 theory papers written by supervisory candidates, and the results of the viewing of videotapes of process group sessions run by fifteen CPE supervisors. Interviews were conducted with students, patients and training supervisors.  Two final interviews explored the impact of such a study on the training process. Equipping Christian lay people for effective ministry is mandated by the Scriptures, Lutheran theology and the practical needs of the church. Clinical pastoral education has proven an effective training method for both professional and lay caregivers in a variety of settings.  Its process and techniques can be adapted for use in equipping lay caregivers in congregations.
