Dealing with the needs of commuter households, determining ways to enable them to participate meaningfully in the life and ministry of the church, and facilitating the transformation of a commuter church into an outward focused, community-anchored church are adaptive problems. Within the context of the congregation this writer serves, he sought to structure a conversation among young adults currently active within the church and those without through surveys and interviews. In May 2010, the congregation took the Gallup ME25 survey. Case studies were conducted on churches that had made similar efforts. A resurvey in November 2011 occurred following efforts to focus on people's strengths. Meaningful increases were found on multiple items with many increased responses. Overall engagement of the congregation increased, while not-engaged and actively disengaged percentages decreased.
