Presented to a small group of no more than seven couples over six sessions, the format combines theory presentation, discussion, home assignments and skill development.  Couples who took the course indicated improvement in their relationship-development skills and a clarification of values and goals for their relationship.  The participants felt that they could deal with conflict more openly and creatively than before and had learned some important communication skills. Its basic thesis is that a minister possessing minimal counseling training can effectively prepare couples for marriage by adherence to its design.  The theological grounding of the project is pastoral and process and it contains a critical examination of the role of the church in marriage.  In addition, an extensive survey of other methods of preparing couples for marriage is presented. After a short demographic study of marriage in the United States today and an analysis of the current situation among Catholic married persons, the author cites contemporary church teaching and outlines the history and structures of marriage enrichment programs, couple communications workshops, marriage encounter week-ends, and finally, Teams of Our Lady.
