Current communications research and resources (new bells) are presented to enable parish ministers to develop communications strategies as a tool in ministry (new steeples).  Chapter 1 explains the communications process of message-sending and message-receiving.  Chapters 2, 3 and 4 focus on the three primary elements of that process: communicator, audience, and message.  Chapters 5 and 6 discuss the mass media.  The paper concludes with a theological perspective on the ministry of communications as an incarnational experience. The project gathered a group of pastors who: 1) identified their primary modality for receiving and processing information; 2) became aware of other modalities; and 3) attempted to compose and deliver sermons which addressed all three types of sensory dominance among the people of their congregations.  Neurolinguistic programming and modality strengths from the fields of therapy and education were the springboards for the overall dissertation. A manual was developed showing the relationship between success in attracting people into fellowship with a congregation and some forms of nonverbal communication, such as nonverbal messages and nonspeech messages.  The manual was subjected to evaluation by the Commission on Evangelism and Renewal for the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and revised according to their recommendations. The central thesis of this study is that there is an organic connection between text and sermon at the level of form.  Throughout the study it is assumed that form and content are inseparable but distinguishable. This purpose was accomplished by the development of an instrument which was applied in four local church settings.  The instrument contains sixteen statements related to interpersonal communication in the local parish.  Each pastor involved was to complete a self-evaluation and compare that evaluation with those completed by selective members of the congregation.
