Consequently, attention had to be given to this definition and its use.  It was accomplished by observing various ways of classifying sermons with special attention given to the meaning associated with the category 'expository'.  Various methods considered expositional in nature were explored and a refined definition was developed.  A second assumption which served as a basis for the structure of this manual was that certain communiction principles are valid for the preaching event.  The communication principles valid for the preacher to be concerned with are structure, argumentation, and persuasive procedure. Ths information was gained through a written survey of those missionaries who had completed the Assemblies of God Graduate School (AGGS) pre-field training program.  The results of the survey showed a strongly favorable response to the AGGS pre-field training program, with those aspects dealing with cross-cultural communication and cultural adjustment rating the highest.  Language learning was of greatest concern. The principles of andragogy employed in a non-formal setting were found to be the most effective.  Training for cross-cultural service required a heavy emphasis on the development of interpersonal skills. Other research included interviews and workshops at a video conference.  Measuring the response of the viewers to the cable program was difficult. Laypersons were not mobilized sufficiently.  No known commitment to Christ resulted. This project was designed to provide two tools to enhance that process for those involved in staff ministry within the Church of the Nazarene.  The report outlines a traditional understanding of ministry within a denominational context.  It researches areas of verbalized concern from interviews, discusses potential barriers to staff ministry due to denominational polity, and develops communication tools to enhance effectiveness in ministry. Active listening, articulating personal needs, triangulation, and four ego defenses, drawn primarily from Virginia Satir and Murray Bowen's ideas, were explored through verbal presentations, skits, and discussions.  As a result, the participants were better able to identify potential problem patterns of communication.  They were also able to successfully apply this learning to their marriages one month later. Couples who took the course indicated improvement in their relationship-development skills and a clarification of values and goals for their relationship.  The participants felt that they could deal with conflict more openly and creatively than before and had learned some important communication skills.
