The conduct of this project included interpersonal communication surveys of the participants, six hours of instruction in interpersonal communication, followed by a written examination. The participants were then evaluated by the project director in the practice of their interpersonal communication skills within a small group setting. Self help advice versus God centered instruction: can biblical expositional preaching provide answers for contemporary issues?"],"abstract_tesim":["In today's culture, it seems as if the voice of the therapeutic culture is louder and having more validity than the word of God.  As the pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, the author was able to ask the question: can biblical expositional preaching help a multigenerational church steeped in therapeutic culture deal with contemporary issues?  A case study was produced where first the author developed a focus group to develop the contemporary issues that were important to the congregation as well as a survey to identify the top contemporary issues to be highlighted in a sermon series preached at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  After the sermon series, those who participated in the initial survey were asked to participate in a follow-up survey to see if the preaching was helpful in dealing with contemporary issues. Conversely, an effectively managed pastoral persona can actually aid in the communication of a message.  This project explores the issue and offers strategies for effectively managing pastoral persona.  The project surveys scholarship on the subject of rhetoric, a study of celebrity preachers, and the results of two focus groups held to explore issues of pastoral persona with mid career pastors and with seminary students. It emerges out of the author's desire to preach sermons that stimulate emotions and intuitions as well as the listeners' intellectual capacity.  Drawing upon Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, the author presented sermons incorporating diverse artistic media as a means of engaging various intelligences.  Feedback to these sermons was solicited through both written and verbal responses. The project director researched the doctrinal beliefs distinctive of Baptists and developed a list of selected doctrinal beliefs to be addressed in a sermon series. By employing insights gleaned from studying comedy, preachers can expose listeners' false assumptions and prompt them to reinterpret interpretation they thought they already knew.
