The challenge facing the church is to incorporate new members into its life and mission through a process of blending past faith histories and experiences with present needs, goals, and expectations in such a way that a commitment evolves giving direction to the future.  By examining the biblical witness, blending families, and organizational development, a blending process which shapes identity emerges. Developing the concept of community as an expansion of the existing family identity, was implemented in a combined sermon series and initiation of groups focusing on outreach, mutual support, and reflection on faith. The theological rationale is based on the three-dimensional definition of koinonia by Joseph Henry Thayer.  The theoretical section provides a definition of koinonia and establishes criteria for the formation of koinonia groups. Historic and contemporary examples of small groups are then examined and evaluated using Thayer's definition of koinonia. The hypothesis was that by attention to intimacy, leadership, and mission a strategy for the establishment of community could be developed so as to positively effect church renewal.  The research method was integrative-wholistic using an action-research model.  The hypothesis was proven correct.
