The thesis reviews studies on mainline decline and postmodernism.  It utilizes a radical understanding of the Pauline ecclesia as a community in which all relationships had to be renegotiated: 'neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female.'  The thesis draws on the author's experience in church development as a presbytery associate executive. The thesis tested was whether literature can be used more effectively than traditional Bible study to change attitudes of class participants.  Three groups were tested: a class reading Will D Campbell's The Glad River, a Bible study group looking at biblical themes of community, and another class serving as a control group.  An identical questionnaire was administered before and after the studies, and the responses were compared and evaluated.
