If it is, who decides what the center and those boundaries are? The church needs a model which accepts as a cultural given the moral autonomy of the individual, yet which also believes the Christian community has a significant role to play in helping its members make their moral decisions. Since moral authority no longer comes from the 'top down,' does that mean the church must leave each individual alone to be his/her own authority on all moral issues? Or is there a middle ground where genuine moral discourse can take place? The local congregation offers the best hope for the kind of moral dialogue and decision-making which accepts the reality of individual autonomy while re-creating the possibility of community consensus on moral norms."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135384477892608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:13.383Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"794db1b3-c456-45af-a4fc-2ea8072e95db","accessControl_ssim":["70367661-7ae6-496f-874f-eb6cfaa5cf16"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["That the fruit might be perfected: liturgical catechesis and a local church curriculum"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:42:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["445251c3-d3dc-4fe3-bb69-f2ff04547c4b"],"hasLease_ssim":["783a1498-2871-4764-8944-8d4c1cac81b6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John R Hendrick","J Frederick Holper"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["T Randall Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Worship","Communities--Religious aspects","Catechetics","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author proposes that a division has arisen in the life of the church between the liturgical, or worship, dimension of the community of faith and its catechesis, or community-forming, dimension. This division has weakened the church's ability to witness for the gospel. After examining several modern attempts to overcome this problem, the author adopts one of these attempts, the faith community approach, and proposes to use it in a modified form to examine the curriculum of a local congregation. Using an understanding of curriculum advanced by Maria Harris and Susanne Johnson, the author defines curriculum as 'the whole life of the Church as it is manifested in a congregation's worship, instruction, and praxis in explicit, implicit, and unacknowledged ways.' The author seeks to indicate how a local congregation's life would be impacted by such a definition and understanding to create what the author calls liturgical catechesis. Finally, the author examines the implications of liturgical catechesis for pastors, local congregations, seminaries, and judicatories, and offers some theological reflections on the subject."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135253375483904,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:08.354Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bac3e9f1-e275-4d5c-9b94-13875410265c","accessControl_ssim":["79cbb51d-02e1-4f31-9436-7f5e5f8f7eeb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'In' the world not 'of' the world: the church as a public community of faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:30:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["025df6ed-40be-4726-a66b-41bf5e65b94b"],"hasLease_ssim":["f3f7dfeb-e3ac-4d86-9861-975600c3574f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Erskine Clarke"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gary C Christensen"],"keyword_tesim":["Two kingdoms doctrine"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Baby boom generation","Communities--Religious aspects","Church and the world"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The public church 'in' the world does not serve in a contextual vacuum. Powerful sociological, economic, cultural, technological and historical factors all shape and influence the ministry of the church. At the same time, the church 'in' the world is also the church not 'of' the world. Neither sectarian retreat nor a wholesale sellout of the church's otherworldy agenda of ministry to accommodate the world are viable options. Instead a new vision and understanding of what it means to be 'in' not 'of' is desperately neded by both the church and the world. The purpose of this study is to describe the ethos and worldview of a typical mainstream baby boomer congregation and to offer an alternate response to the American context. The author presents the biblical rationale and theological underpinnings to support his notion of the public community of faith that exists 'in' the world for the sake 'of' the world. Central to this model of congregational life and ministry is a strong belief in the doctrine of two kingdoms and the ensuing paradox of discipleship and faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129247908102144,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:41.093Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:05:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:34:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"53c03e76-f5ac-426b-abdc-ac10f5c701d1","accessControl_ssim":["26c282cd-0ea2-48d7-a9ac-e6810b963332"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A model for revival in the local church derived from the work of Finney and Wesley"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:05:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:35:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["82f5a70c-de3f-4fb3-bd54-ba355aaef19b"],"hasLease_ssim":["79106d14-cdd9-4640-9aec-b2a5d620f38f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["William J Abraham"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Clara M Reed"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Class meetings, Methodist","Hamilton Park United Methodist Church (Dallas, Tex)","Spiritual exercises","Revivals","Communities--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to develop a model for promoting spiritual revival within the local church utilizing the means available through the exercise of spiritual discipline and promotion of community and Christian nurture through participation in Wesleyan style class meetings. The project was designed to test the thesis that the church can experience revival whenever the members are willing to employ these means which God has provided. The project was implemented at Hamilton Park United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX, over the course of a ten-week period. The project consisted of four primary phases which included: 1) a workshop on spiritual discipline, evangelism and faith-sharing; 2) six weeks of weekly class meetings; 3) church-wide days of consecration; and 4) revival worship services. The findings of the study support the thesis that revival can be promoted through use of the aforementioned means.
