I used the approach of Lutheran theologian George Lindbeck to develop an alternative way to think about Christian communities and to develop a process for reforming a Lutheran identity through what he calls a cultural-linguistic model.  This approach, which I chose to reform the identity of Holy Cross Lutheran Church (Austin, Texas), places emphasis on learning the language of faith through the process of community catechesis.  A key part of the process for discerning the present identity of the Holy Cross community was preaching a series of seven sermons based on themes found in Paul Hanson's The People Called. Research for this thesis has focused on writings that develop the notion of the centrality of community, and especially how the concept of community has an impact on the process of preaching.  The preacher is seen as one who is set in the midst of community, in contrast to one who is set apart from the community.  The preacher speaks, not to the congregation, but for them, articulating their deepest faith affirmations.
