The foundation for the answer is found in the Biblical teaching that holds the purity of God's church in tension with the growth of God's church. The Bible consistently exhorts leaders to be attentive to both purity and growth, not emphasizing one to the neglect of the other. Only a comprehensive understanding of Biblical teaching can produce a theology of assimilation that guards the church from both extremes. A survey of church history demonstrates the difficulty of maintaining this balance, as the church at times has been too exclusive and at other times too inclusive. An examination of the confessions and creeds of all major denominations reveals a consistent recognition of three criterion that must be met in order for one to be admitted into the full privileges and responsibilities of church life, mainly through the time-honored traditions of church membership and church discipline. These high standards are largely neglected in the North American church today, resulting in a spiritually weak, theologically illiterate, and largely unregenerate church. This dissertation examines the pastoral ministry of Jonathan Edwards as a case study for developing a theology of assimilation. Special attention is paid to the process, rationale, circumstances, and missteps leading up to his dismissal from the Northhampton Church. Practical principles are drawn from this significant event and applied to First Bible Church of Decatur, Alabama."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128453967249408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:03.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:13:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:42:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ee97f410-9d44-48f1-b263-018d6dca6bdd","accessControl_ssim":["f0f78ed9-3847-44fe-9841-8fcdbe110511"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nice sermon, but will it preach?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:56:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1ffd6360-89b1-47a1-8d7e-2871899a3044"],"hasLease_ssim":["00993782-8ea5-476a-951a-2c2775db5b32"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marcia C Eveland"],"publisher_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Communities--Religious aspects","United Church of Christ","Narrative preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Once there was a sermon series, acclaimed by the preacher's homiletics professors, that bombed in the pews. In order to test the validity of these claims regarding the community builder metaphor, I worked in concert with eight laity from my ministry context at First Baptist Church of Forsyth, Georgia, developing an eight sermon series from the Book of Ecclesiastes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129869295288320,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:22:33.694Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:37:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"093657a0-dd6f-4196-999d-3fc45c3c8c3d","accessControl_ssim":["d1524c64-7c9d-4908-bee7-9cf7199b0bf6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Faces of the new Black church: a comparative study of three Africultural churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:22:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3f62cc82-2f81-4df6-8b97-10b1dafdc352"],"hasLease_ssim":["a0d4f6d9-8c26-4489-bc24-785cf8a7a59c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C Anthony Hunt"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author suggests that what has been traditionally termed and understood as the 'Black Church' is not a sufficient descriptor of the experience of African, African-American, and Caribbean people coming together as one community of faith. Thus, the project seeks to lead the congregations to embrace their cultural diversity using a new paradigm: 'The Africultural Church'. The term 'Africultural' is used to describe a multiethnic faith community of persons of African ancestry, which strives to be wholly Christian and multicultural, yet celebrates its Africanness. It is understood that issues arising form ethnocentrism may challenge this new community. Specifically, there may be cultural distances and stereotypes that must be overcome to effectively engage in ministry. To this end, the project explores the cultural consciousness of the three congregations with respect to worship practices, mission and ministry, and lay leadership; best practices derived from these Africultural ministry settings; and the role of the pastor in leading the congregations to more faithfully embrace their cultural diversity. A model of community transformation is also proposed, which uses Bible study and a study circle process to raise cultural consciousness and promote diversity. Liberation theology, John Wesley's notion of a 'catholic spirit' and personality development theory are theological and theoretical foundations for the model. Using this model, the project seeks to identify held stereotypes and cultural conflicts in one congregation and move that congregation toward the affirmation and wider embrace of its cultural diversity. From that experience, further implications for pastoral leadership and ministry strategy in Africultural communities are drawn."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714856870346752,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:15.852Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:44:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:14:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8cc3c679-02c2-4c6c-b402-675c0a007e28","accessControl_ssim":["bf50cf44-540f-42e5-ae5c-56e8dd5e6b3a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Beloved Community: theologizing a vision for Catholic youth ministry among older adolescents"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:44:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:15:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e91fdd7e-fb07-43dc-afe5-3c711cab9a46"],"hasLease_ssim":["dc76300e-8eec-47d5-aba2-49593e79aecb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Thomas A Nairn"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Cathleen Campbell"],"publisher_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"subject_tesim":["King, Martin Luther, Jr, 1929-1968","Church work with youth","Communities--Religious aspects","Catholic Church--Youth","Kingdom of God"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Youth have a responsibility for furthering the reign of God yet older adolescents increasingly are leaving the Catholic community.
