The communities that once sustained a sense of belonging have withered or have become merely places to live. This project looks at Scotland's evolving post-modern society and the fragmentation that has accompanied it. The paper seeks to suggest ways in which New Charges can offer communities of faith that can become places where people may find companionship, purpose and faith. This study defines and discusses individualism at the family meal table and the 'Lord's Table.' In a world of rapid change we must switch to a different way of reaching them. This project proposes that small groups are a fruitful method of meeting deep needs. I studied a small group that met seven times over a period of six weeks to study building relationship, prayer and spiritual growth. The findings confirm that small groups are a method that significantly meets the need of relationships, increases prayer and aids in spiritual growth. Some significant findings show that there was a 67% increase in spiritual growth due to the need for input and involvement from others in a small group setting. This is consistent with John Wesley's model for small groups. There was an increase of fifty percent in the understanding of true community after a small group experience. This demonstrates the need for close relationships and the desire for personal accountability. In order for this project to make an impact, transformation needs to take place. Robert Quinn, in his book, Change the World, says that 'transforming a human system usually means we transform ourselves' (Quinn 2000, 4). My hope is for transformation and vision to take place in my heart so I can lead transformation in my church through small groups."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["beb93775-0b27-4cc6-9fb0-f2ad62e68517"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130647413129216,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:55.766Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:19:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:57:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5ad2df9b-c7ab-446a-a358-9d6143b2c771","accessControl_ssim":["05286515-17c8-4b21-a0d0-c760ae35dac9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Making the stranger a friend: a model for a newcomer orientation event for Grace United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:19:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:48:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3dc3ff60-1f3c-481c-8a52-08e1f8c0fecf"],"hasLease_ssim":["8f10f5c2-e165-41a1-91ff-00ebf04d07f8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ben C Johnson"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["J Alexander Ward"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Assimilation (Sociology)","Communities--Religious aspects","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that assimilation of newcomers is a necessary component of a church's ministry because of the inherently social character of the Christian faith and the instruction of Jesus to welcome strangers (Matt 25:35).
