The project examines recent cultural and denominational reviews of individualism, investigates connectivity in the Book of Acts, interviews pastors and reports recent models of connectivity.  Based on these findings, the project presents resolutions and four models from the early church, documenting the rise of extreme individualism in culture and churches. The nature, foundations, and consequences of this shift are documented in detail, to support the thesis that participatory performance of Scripture is a powerfully effective mode of establishing and maintaining Christian community. I used the approach of Lutheran theologian George Lindbeck to develop an alternative way to think about Christian communities and to develop a process for reforming a Lutheran identity through what he calls a cultural-linguistic model.  This approach, which I chose to reform the identity of Holy Cross Lutheran Church (Austin, Texas), places emphasis on learning the language of faith through the process of community catechesis.  A key part of the process for discerning the present identity of the Holy Cross community was preaching a series of seven sermons based on themes found in Paul Hanson's The People Called. Research for this thesis has focused on writings that develop the notion of the centrality of community, and especially how the concept of community has an impact on the process of preaching.  The preacher is seen as one who is set in the midst of community, in contrast to one who is set apart from the community.  The preacher speaks, not to the congregation, but for them, articulating their deepest faith affirmations. If it is, who decides what the center and those boundaries are? The church needs a model which accepts as a cultural given the moral autonomy of the individual, yet which also believes the Christian community has a significant role to play in helping its members make their moral decisions. Since moral authority no longer comes from the 'top down,' does that mean the church must leave each individual alone to be his/her own authority on all moral issues? Or is there a middle ground where genuine moral discourse can take place?
