Dealing with the needs of commuter households, determining ways to enable them to participate meaningfully in the life and ministry of the church, and facilitating the transformation of a commuter church into an outward focused, community-anchored church are adaptive problems. Tongan traditional religion which formed Tongan culture and society still impacts Tongan Christianity. Traditional religious culture has a hierarchical structure which has influenced all segments of society and even Christian beliefs and practices. Immigrant churches have adopted the same hierarchical structure and added other social status, such as wealth and achievement, which create more physical and psychological barriers in the church community. The social issues add up to an unhealthy church, ministry, and Tongan community at large that causes divisions among families. This project relies heavily on historical research to identify the ways in which Christianity as a fledgling religion was able to succeed against the great religions of the Greco-Roman world. Finally, the project concludes that Christianity brought a gospel of hope to the world full of haplessness, especially to the masses in the Greco-Roman world. Christianity created a new community that served the needs of the destitute, generated a sense of belonging, welfare/health agency, and treated everyone inclusively with equality. On the website the participants studied and discussed particular passages of scripture. The content of those scriptural discussions was then used to formulate sermons. In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 members of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) located in Crookston, Minnesota. The two topics of hearing the voice of God in community and consensus-based decision-making were explored. An action plan for the future ministry of the church was developed. The researcher designed a virtual community, 'Sawubona.' The participants discussed their interactions with the church. This dialogue identified perceived and real exclusions and discovered practical strategies that both the disabled and local churches can use to improve participation. Participants were interviewed before and after the project to gain insight into their experiences with participating in churches. The author carried out his research using a narrative study methodology, also making use of ethnographic practices on both clergy and laity. The research concluded that a dark night of the soul starts with a perceived separation from God and leads to a reconnection with God. Advancements in communication and transportation have enabled people to live more dispersed from one another. This lack of proximity has created a commuter culture. This dissertation looks at the concept of community both biblically and theologically. The digital age has produced an abundance of technological communication tools. This work examines their importance in developing and in hindering community. The concept of 'missionality' as a key to forming community with traditional attractional churches is also presented. The author reflects on his own leadership experiences, bibliographic sources, and research interviews with fourteen mega-church senior pastors from across America. The conclusions of this study suggest that biblical teamwork occurs when the cause of Christ is advanced in the contet of loving community. After interviewing ten Asian American churches in the northeastern United States in regards to their discipleship processes, and reviewing selected literature on discipleship, a process was developed. Churches in the United States often struggle to effectively equip believers with a strong foundation in the Word of God and to multiply by making disciples. The lack of relationships within the church body that encourage and guide spiritual formation, and discipleship that does not integrate transparent relationships, mutual accountability, and biblical truth, are part of the cause. Many postmoderns do not start from an understanding of the Judeo-Christian faith or believe in absolute truth, but see truth as an unfixed perspective relative to the community in which an individual lives. Yet postmoderns are deeply spiritual and longing for shelter from the bombardment of news about the economy, natural disasters, wars, and famines. They long for a home where they can find rest for their souls. The church is called to make known the God who is a shelter in the storm of life and a place of rest for weary souls. There are two ways in which the glorious Son of God is made known by the church: the preaching of Scripture and the worshiping community.
