The author explored the background of the sweeping changes that the Church faces in the twenty-first century, visited congregations of various sizes and locations to investigate how the average parishioner understands discipleship, and undertook the work of developing a parish covenant as a way of strengthening community and forming disciples for the work of mission. Parish surveys, semi-structured interviews and statistical analysis were employed. The author also studies theological motifs of Christian community as a foundational preparation for churches and annual conferences to engage in transformative ministry. Data was accumulated from a survey that was distributed to one hundred pastors of evangelical churches.
