Can Christians be taught to be more aware of God's guidance when doing acts of compassion? This qualitative action research project examined this question by introducing traditional United Methodists to a new method of spiritual formation, Compassion Awareness Training (CAT). The project contained six CAT sessions and two implementation sessions. CAT sessions included instruction about compassion and listening to God, treasure maps of Spirit-inspired clues for a compassion event, and Wesleyan Quadrilateral based questions to clarify clues. The project's effectiveness was evaluated by triangulating data from assessments, definitions, journals, and interviews."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129206066774016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:01.191Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:57:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:05:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a5c7ea92-f7bc-41a9-bb5c-974ed8136270","accessControl_ssim":["062538de-9ec2-494e-be46-023fc432e3fc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Compassion fatigue and the church counselor at Saddleback Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:57:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:56:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19efbe47-223b-4ed1-bac2-3988c111867c"],"hasLease_ssim":["06d75f31-a9cc-4db4-8b5a-c985ff399328"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jim Wilson","Naomi K Paget"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kathy Ann Camarillo"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Saddleback Church (Lake Forest, Calif)","Burn out (Psychology)","Compassion--Religious aspects--Christianity","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The church counselors at Saddleback Church are at risk of compassion fatigue due to their exposure to traumatic events in the counseling process. It begins by looking at a contemporary understanding of compassion, and then moves to a biblical reflection on the word in both the First and Second Testaments. Numerous anecdotes and stories reflecting 15 years of ministry help bridge the biblical witness with contemporary life in the church. Study questions at the end of each chapter aid personal reflection and group discussion. The project concludes that compassion is much more than an emotion; it is a full process to be followed in the practice of ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135229268721664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:47:45.364Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:53:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:03:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"99c1cef9-de5d-4ffb-a689-f7bab5f0afee","accessControl_ssim":["95a35ffe-730a-4886-8539-178c36b1528e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping selected lay persons at Westown Baptist Church in the development of caring skills in their ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:53:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:38:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["adb1b967-a1c1-403e-811a-a5233cfcc37a"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa25cfc1-2163-4565-9e35-62c3892ceb3b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leroy Gainey"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Eric J Hatch"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Compassion--Religious aspects--Christianity","Westown Baptist Church","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The desire for the outcome of the project was to better equip lay ministers at Westown Baptist Church. The knowledge of the church's needs, theological foundations and theoretical presuppositions all pointed to the needs that the project addressed. The project became an instrument of planned programming to prepare participants to minister more effectively and knowledgeably. The thesis investigates theology, biblical word studies, group pastoral care, dance, and applications from dance-movement therapy, music therapy, and left brain/right brain research. Compassion is found to be a process of connecting by centering, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Over a three-month period, ninety percent of the congregation favored such centering. Sixty-four percent experienced greater ability to share compassion from the interventions. The significance of this study for other congregations lies in the fact that it brings together a coalition of several ministry emphases--evangelism, missions, worship and Christian education--through which the cycle of compassion may find development and fruition.
