At the beginning of the course students asked questions of God.  These questions were used to structure a curriculum, based on the Bible and life experiences, to answer the questions.  The students were tested at the end of this study to compare what they had learned to what they knew before. It was based on an approach to confirmation as a process of identity formation. The project concluded with a 'mission worship' led by the youth in which samulnori and other aspects of Korean culture were introduced into the confirmation service. The information gleaned from these conversations shed light on the inner life of the families, their systems, traditions, hurts and hopes. Persons experiencincing two contrasting styles of confirmation education were surveyed ten years after their confirmation. The author conducts interview testing to discover if attitude shifts occur as a result of the subcommittee's work.  He surveys 62 congregations about their confirmation practices. For the most part, the church has ignored this major life-cycle event, but the author seeks to rectify this neglect.  He draws on liturgical history and developmental psychology to argue that Confirmation cannot fill this gap. Leaving home is an initiation into the culture, not into the church. The author hypothesized that this might be accomplished by substituting three rites of spiritual passage for the customary infant baptism and confirmation.  Drawing on the liturgies of the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Canada and the work of developmental psychologists he designed three rites of passage and tested them in his congregation over a period of two years. The historical development of confirmation is traced from its roots in the early church down to the twentieth century.  A case study is also presented describing one congregation's attempt to renew its practice of confirmation.  A traditional tendency to over-emphasize confirmation at the expense of baptism is questioned as well as typical methods of confirmation preparation. Confirmation is related to its roots in baptism and the process of initiating children into the church.
