Holy listening, in verbal and contemplative prayer, scripture, faith stories, and personal interaction, was studied through qualitative data collected from the youth. Confirmation content (scriptural, historical, denominational and congregational) became stories which were part of the teens' own spiritual journey and story as they confirmed their baptism. The Zimbabwean United Methodist Church is continuing to experience considerable numerical and spiritual growth. However, pastors do not have educational resources which are adequate to train new members and mature old ones. The preparation of candidates for baptism and confirmation is identified as a critical need and the project focuses on developing materials to be used by pastors in this preparation. The intent is to equip pastors with teaching strategies and tools (rather than lesson plans), and material is compiled from historical and biblical perspectives. Resources utilized include conversations with district superintendents and pastors, surveys of church members, and archival material accessed in Zimbabwe. Confirmation can introduce youth to systematic theology/ecclesiology and be an initiatory vehicle into adult faith and service.  Resources are limited in rural settings, so this project tried to expand limits while remaining pragmatic.  The author, drawing upon his own experience in rural churches and from a broad range of sources, developed a 12-week course (God and Friends) which aims to be a concise, simple-to-use, yet comprehensive 'primer' on Christian doctrine and practice. He calls for a new model of confirmation which will overcome the growing sense of dislocation felt by our youth. He develops a plan which includes a sense of personal and corporate story that is intergenerational in scope.  The project uses Arnold van Gennep's theory that rites of passage follow a universal tripartite rhythm of separation, transition, and incorporation.  The process must occur if a person is to make the transition from one stage of life to another.  One of the more important life crises, or transitions, is the coming of age. The involvement of the lay leadership of the congregation also led to a sense of renewal in the life of the church.  A nine month period of time provided ample opportunity for relationships to develop based on the tradition of the church and with specific people in the local congregation.  The design was tested with interviews, observations, and evaluation forms over a period of five years in two different congregations to improve the
