He also assumed that with growth comes change and that change has an inherent capacity for conflict.  When conflict is properly managed, growth is encouraged; when conflict is not managed, growth is thwarted and the church is unable to carry out its task. The nature of conflict is carefully studied through an actual church conflict.  The case study method analyzes the conflict and describes positive and negative management principles.  These principles are then compared to other conflict management models.  The results of the study provide principles that develop a theology of conflict in the local church. Conflict management models are compared. Research was done into the theological basis for dealing with conflict.  Literature as well as in-person interviews of Unitarian historians were used to draw a record of how Unitarians and Universalists have dealt with conflicts in the past.  Extensive use of personal interviews was employed to gather information from leaders, lay and clergy, of the congregations targeted for the study.
