Though it is a common Biblical theme in both the Old and New Testaments, congregations tend to ignore or even be embarrassed by the complaining and anger which run through Scripture. The purpose of my project has been to bring lament to the fore not only for individual believers, but also for the ministry of the Church as a whole -- in worship, small group ministry, youth ministry and ministry to the lost and broken.The dramatic memoir presented here is the culmination of the research and analysis I have performed in the Scriptures, in the books I have read, and in my talks with people in the congregations I have served. The dramatic memoir traces a path toward reconciliation between one person and another, and also between a person and God. Seven one hour and fifteen-minute sessions were designed, in which ten leaders took part. The training sessions addressed the following issues: understanding the emotional system of the church, positioning leaders to address conflict, analysis of the conflict through the five levels of conflict, analysis of the conflict through roles and communication study, communication skills, dealing with the problematic, and specific skills training for resolution of conflict. The curriculum design consisted of seven one-hour and fifteen minute sessions. Eighteen selected leaders met on Wednesday evenings at First Baptist Church, Livingston, Louisiana. The seven sessions addressed the following church conflict management issues: defining conflict and identifying sources of conflict, identifying biblical examples and principles of conflict, discovering conflict management styles, identifying levels of conflict, and utilizing a collaborative problem-solving process as a conflict manager. The project goals included researching how to manage church conflict for the training of the selected leaders, developing the teaching plans in order to equip the selected leaders in conflict management skills, and equipping selected leaders in conflict management skills. My research focused upon three areas of exploration: is God always present; can effective pastoral leadership skills be identified; and is balanced leadership in the church driven by sound theology? My purpose was to learn more about pastoral leadership as it relates to the life and mission of the church during times of disagreement and conflict. From Scripture, I focused on Moses as a model leader who faithfully led the people of God along a difficult journey of change, conflict and reconciliation. Building on a foundation of readings about pastoral leadership and church conflict, along with business management resources, my strategy was to prepare a series of questions to help guide my interviews with other pastors.
