By addressing and resolving their conflicts individuals and groups of people develop an internal rigor, enhance mutual understanding, sharpen their mandates, and deal proactively with important issues in their lives and societies. The two factors that harness conflict's catalytic potential and avert conflict's destructive power are mechanisms for directing conflict toward positive outcomes and effective mediators. The research base was constructed around the writer's experience as a mediator and his ongoing study in the field. The unique call of the congregation has challenged the church to respond to new needs and problems at the end of the twentieth century. The project is a study of the special role of congregations and the unique relationship between the social sciences and theology. It includes an overview of literature available on consultation, conflict and community and an analysis of two processes of intervention: 'shalom-building' and 'bridgebuilder.' Four case studies illuminate the two intervention processes. Appointed or elected leaders in churches affiliated with CBAmerica were participants. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (1974) was used in this study, measuring competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding and accommodating conflict management styles. The biographical information sheet collected data relating to sex, age, length of Christian experience, length of church membership and length of leadership. The majority of leaders surveyed had been Christians for fifteen or more years. This group scored low in the competing mode, and high in the avoiding mode. The project was designed to help the participants understand their personal attitudes about conflict, to develop an awareness of mediation, and to train them to become mediators by using a mediation model. The project involved a pre-seminar test, a conflict management inventory, lectures on the theological and theoretical basis for mediation, role play, and case studies.
