Recognizing the inevitability of conflict, it is essential for Christians to navigate through conflict in a biblical manner. This project researched the field of conflict management and identified biblical passages that enabled the project director to develop a curriculum for the purpose of training the deacons. The deacons are eleven men, chosen by the congregation for the purpose of protecting unity and ministering the needs of the church body. The deacons participated in seven hours of training that led them to develop a biblical perspective and approach to managing conflict. This training included a variety of teaching techniques and evaluations. Peacemaking in the church is an unavoidable call for pastors and church members. They need to put into practice biblical, redemptive ways for peacebuilding as they respond to conflict. The Christian peacemaking approach requires spiritual discernment. The author presented such tools as biblical texts on conflict transformation like Acts 15 and 1 Corinthians 1, narrative theology and narrative leadership in order to claim the biblical faith in Jesus, the Crucified and the Mediator. These are utilized by sorting out 'competing stories' against the Christian narrative that conflicting situations often cause. In favor of the conflict transformation theory and practice, the author presented mediation processes such as the Circle Process that work well in the field of conflict transformation. The following issues were addressed: conflict as inevitable, healthy, and necessary; seven intensities of conflict; confrontation and communication; biblical peacemaking; overcoming antagonism; forgiveness and reconciliation; and conflict-readiness through the spiritual disciplines. The project goals were to research the field of conflict resolution, to develop teaching sessions to equip selected believers in conflict resolution skills, and to equip selected believers in conflict resolution skills. The first two chapters draw an introductory portrait of ministry needs. The next chapter describes six phases of methodology necessary to achieve this goal, followed by a theologically constructed foundation in chapter four. The next two chapters use examples of church conflict found in the New Testament and describe the findings from survey analysis. Pastor as peacemaker is to be a program-centered project consisting of twelve written lectures intended for a one unit (12 hour) course to be taught as an interim course at a reformed seminary (e.g., a weeklong course, four days three hours per day). Research was three-fold: anaylsis of a biblical and theological doctrine of reconciliation, contemporary Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) theory and methods, and by way of student evaluation. The result was an effective theology and method of training pastors to be peacemakers in their churches.
