Insights from the past provide guidance for present and future ministries.  How issues are addressed becomes important to the church in a pluralistic age.  Over one hundred fifty years of religious and social development in the Black Swamp area of Ohio was written as adult curriculum material.  This material was taught and evaluated for future use within the congregation.  The viability of the program is discussed from the viewpoint of both author and congregation. The context is an urban ministry agency of the United Methodist Church working among the urban poor in charleston, west virginia. The most frequent model for 'mission' contact with the local church is interpretation, not prophecy.  The prevailing expectation for a missionary is that he or she interpret their work to the local church, not raise prophetic words concerning it.  My program found viable ways in which the biblical-theological understanding can be focused in local churches to use their resources.  It communicates understandings, awakens consciences, and prompts new directions whisle using the history and stories of local churches. The hypothesis was that through formation of a group named Order of Mission, its members would develop toward Christian maturity, and the congregation would assume a conscious stance of world involvement.  The group was action-oriented, but also fulfilled functions of reflection, fellowship, and celebration.  The model was AAAR: awareness, analysis, action, and reflection.  The hypothesis was partially proven.  Group members experienced deepened concern for mission, but the congregation did not show strong evidence of following this direction. The content of their meetings is outlined, and several assessments of the project are given. The candidate reflects on the project one year after its completion, and suggests a revised model.  It is concluded that Christian realization through families is a valid model for growth and learning in a congregation. The data collected revealed that there is much going on in church and community directed toward ministry to the elderly but not enough concern being given to the ministry of the elderly.  This means a valuable resource of knowledge, wisdom, and energy is not being adequately used. The study not only collected data to support assumptions and project new learnings but designed and tested a process for helping individuals and churches do some planning directed toward involving elderly in ministry. It describes the selection of training groups from four different Protestant churches of various sizes, with a total of forty-one participants, uses five instruments to gather evaluative data on the effects of the training on the participants, presents and evaluates the results, and draws conclusions.  The evaluative data includes opinion and feelings reported by the participants and their pastors, together with a pre and post questionnaire on attitudes and a report of the participants' involvement in such ministry in the year after training. The pre and post questionnaire showed several changes in the participants' understandings of how people respond to terminal illness, death, and grief, and in participants' attitudes about their own deaths.
