This paper documents how Covenant United Methodist Church engaged in such a study.  The plan chosen for Covenant to study congregational life included the use of such categories as identity, context, process, and program.  Data was obtained from adult and youth class discussions and from information gathered by distributing the 'parish profile inventory' to one-half of Covenant's membership.  A summary of all the data collected provides a portrait of Covenant UMC.  By examining and analyzing this portrait, one may better understand who Covenant is and what Covenant may desire to become. It also has a life cycle.  This paper examines the factors which make for growth and those which cause decline. Knowing where a congregation is in its life cycle permits interventions to be made to alter its path. This was done to search out ways that would provide a vision for spiritual renewal and spur church growth. Christian fellowship was also used to establish a norm for Christian relationships.  The fundamental issue of this aspect of the project dealt with the power structure of the church, how power issues hindered a partnership ministry, and caused people to be divided into separate groups.  The primary focal point of this project was to address these issues by looking at images. 'The body of Christ' was utilized to emphasize that the separate groups were a part of the body of Christ. The concluding portion of this project stressed a partnership of ministry. The practice of ministry in a congregation made up of people of a variety of ethnic origins will encounter problems resulting from ethnic and cultural differences.  In order for the congregation to be integrated into a working and worshipping whole, these differences must be identified and appreciated.  In-depth interviews of eight family units chosen from the traditional congregation and recent-comers from Guyana were conducted, followed by three group meetings.  Transcripts were analysed, and the findings compared with the experience of similar congregations.
