Prior to my arrival, the church leadership had decided to embark upon a period of strategic planning in order to evaluate its ministries and set future direction. The church leadership and I decided to work together in a collaborative strategic planning process, which we termed ReVision, to improve church health and stimulate church growth. We decided to use the approach to church life and health called Natural Church Development (NCD) as the primary model and description of church health. The project at Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church involved the administration of the NCD survey on three occasions--before my arrival as the new senior pastor and the commencement of the strategic planning process, three months after my arrival and still before the formal commencement of the strategic planning process, and eighteen months after my arrival, which was fifteen months into the strategic planning process. Following the release of the results of the third NCD survey, the members of the ReVision Taskforce were given a survey containing four open-ended questions intended to allow them to reflect on the planning process and the congregation's health changes. The quantitative data from the NCD surveys and the qualitative data from the final survey led to the conclusion that the arrival of a new senior pastor and the strategic planning process had been influential in improving the congregation's health and stimulating church growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134711007936513,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:39:31.112Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:30:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:41:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e3dc26d4-9333-455e-a6a3-ac6dfa8c682e","accessControl_ssim":["b2d9ad81-6819-41c1-9a8c-1c76a9110f24"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The congregational plot: preaching, conflict + growth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:30:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:38:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["16a4be3c-cafc-4fc8-837d-78fdc400aff8"],"hasLease_ssim":["b50c1481-15fe-4940-a9c4-c7c87744a951"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["W Dow Edgerton"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy Allen Prowse"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Lowry, Eugene L","Congregations","Small churches","Schaller, Lyle E"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Congregational plot: preaching, conflict plus growth"],"abstract_tesim":["Most small churches are resistant to conflict and many are dying. Many small church pastors are frustrated as they witness the decline of the small church. However, many of these pastors continue using preaching models that seem insufficient to address the issues in the small church, primarily the issue of conflict resistance. This thesis proposes that an alternative preaching model is needed in the small church, particularly one with conflict and complexity built into the preaching model, for the purpose of challenging the small church to embrace conflict so that it might be transformed. This is important to the field of homiletics because it seeks to demonstrate a narrative conflictual model of preaching in an institution that regularly resists conflict. The thesis is supported by theory primarily provided by Lyle Schaller and Eugene Lowry. While transformation does occur for some and energy is created in the small church by using a conflictual model of homiletics, the life expectancy of the small church remains in question."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2ed862c2-32c4-448b-95c8-4a58c3d74b5b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134817549549568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:41:12.718Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:23:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:49:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cb64eb0a-02dc-4678-af96-5243736503a9","accessControl_ssim":["791232df-569b-46f0-abb2-68d235fd0648"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The effect of a facility decision-making process upon the continued growth of a congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:23:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c6548911-ee78-4d10-85fe-aa270a3ac151"],"hasLease_ssim":["8076cf65-7621-444c-8fae-60997fd15ef9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Peter Schmiechen"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
