The polycentric model is where the 'mother' church and a cluster of one or more 'ethnic' churches operate separately on the same campus. Very few of these churches have transitioned to become truly multiracial and continue to either decline or plateau. This dissertation examines the history, underlying assumptions, possible influence, and effectiveness of polycentric churches, and provides a critique of such churches against a theological backdrop. Equally important is the actual occurrence of change when research demands change, regardless of how personally painful such change would be. Implementation was the main qualitative research method used. The main objective was to implement five different components into the small group ministry with the hope that group participation would increase to a percentage which reflected Central Church's stated vision that small groups were an important way to connect. Yet UCC congregations are polarized. The UCC is congregational; the local congregation is the 'basic unit.' Unity must be nurtured within local congregations. Rooted in the scriptural call for unity amid diversity, and built upon the work of others calling for unity in the church, the author proposes a model addressing worship, proclamation, community and service. Diversity is brought out into the open and affirmed rather than being discouraged or ignored. The curriculum design consisted of seven one-hour and fifteen minute sessions. Eighteen selected leaders met on Wednesday evenings at First Baptist Church, Livingston, Louisiana. The seven sessions addressed the following church conflict management issues: defining conflict and identifying sources of conflict, identifying biblical examples and principles of conflict, discovering conflict management styles, identifying levels of conflict, and utilizing a collaborative problem-solving process as a conflict manager. The project goals included researching how to manage church conflict for the training of the selected leaders, developing the teaching plans in order to equip the selected leaders in conflict management skills, and equipping selected leaders in conflict management skills. This project is qualitative in nature; case study research was the primary methodology employed. A biblical theology of inter-cultural community was defined focusing on spirituality, hospitality, and missionality. Ethnographic tools were utilized to determine the emic perspective of the multi-cultural setting of Bethel Christian Fellowship. Characteristics of inter-cultural leaders in a multi-cultural setting were discovered. Transformational dynamics needed to shift a local church to an inter-cultural mindset were described.
